The local police in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh have apprehended a 32-year-old labourer who allegedly sexually assaulted four minor girls within a fortnight. The police said on Wednesday that the accused, identified as Avinash Pandey, has confessed to kidnapping four girls from near their homes between June 25 and July 7.

The police informed that the accused used to lure children with chocolate and food and take them to a nearby forest area where he sexually assaulted them and ultimately released the girls. All four girls assaulted are below the age of 10.

Digital and forensic evidence gathered by a five-member police team led to the identification and arrest of the accused, based on the descriptions provided by the four girls.

“It was the minute details provided by the victims—including a tattoo on his hand, short hair, alcohol consumption, medium build, long face, and the fact that he carried two mobile phones—that helped us identify the accused,” said a senior police official involved in the investigation to the national media.

The girls described the assaulter as a medium-built man with a long face, dusky complexion, average height, wearing black jeans and a round-neck purple T-shirt. Based on this information, the police prepared a sketch of the suspect and began their search for a person matching the description. This was accompanied by help from CCTV footage from areas where the girls were either kidnapped or found. People with a history of similar offences were also brought in for questioning.

“During the investigation, we came across a man matching the given description. The suspect, identified as Avinash Pandey, was taken in for questioning. He was interrogated, and his mobile phone was examined. We discovered objectionable photos and videos of the victims on his device,” the police informed.

The officials have also recovered a bicycle used by Pandey to commit the crimes. He is unmarried and has no prior criminal record. Pandey is now being booked on charges of kidnapping, rape, and voluntarily causing hurt. He is being produced before the court.
