Apple is preparing to say goodbye to Tim Cook, who is set to step down as CEO after a tenure exceeding 15 years. On August 23, the company hosted a farewell event at Apple Park, which saw an attendance of approximately 200 employees. The occasion featured a special performance by OneRepublic, while Cook expressed gratitude to his colleagues and shared personal reflections during the gathering.

The farewell party coincided with the anniversary of Cook’s appointment as CEO, which takes place on August 24. According to reports from The Information, the event was held within the iconic premises of Apple Park in Cupertino, California. Notable figures linked to Apple were also present to honour Cook’s contributions to the company.

Part of the celebration was hosted in Caffe Macs, the cafeteria located within the headquarters, while the outdoor courtyard served as the venue for OneRepublic’s performance. Speeches commemorating Cook’s leadership were delivered by several prominent individuals, including Laurene Powell Jobs, the spouse of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Tributes and Personal Moments

During the event, a number of familiar faces paid tribute to Tim Cook’s leadership. Former Apple COO Jeff Williams, Apple services chief Eddy Cue, and hardware engineering leader John Ternus all took turns speaking in recognition of Cook’s substantial impact on the company’s success. Cook himself also took the stage to address the attendees.

In a rare moment of personal reflection, Cook publicly acknowledged his partner, Mike, marking the occasion as an unusual insight into his private life. Typically, Cook maintains a level of privacy regarding his personal affairs, having previously revealed his sexual orientation in 2014.

Despite the transition from his role as CEO, Tim Cook will not be departing from Apple entirely. He is set to become the executive chairman of the company effective September 1, and will continue to support specific areas of the business, including interactions with global policymakers.

Leadership Transition At Apple

John Ternus is slated to succeed Tim Cook as CEO on the same date. Ternus, who has been with Apple since 2001, has served as senior vice-president of hardware engineering since 2021. The leadership change is anticipated to be one of continuity, aiming to maintain the existing strategic focus of the company with minimal immediate shifts.

Reports indicate that Cook’s executive assistant will remain in their position, continuing to work alongside Ternus in the new management setup. This approach is expected to help facilitate a smooth transition as Ternus steps into his new role.

Immediately following the transition, Ternus will face a significant test as he leads Apple’s highly anticipated September iPhone event. This event will mark his inaugural major product launch as CEO, placing him at the forefront during one of the year’s most scrutinised moments in the tech industry.
