Analysis of Candidates Ahead of Kerala Assembly Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The upcoming Kerala Assembly elections on April 9 will see more than 880 candidates vying for 140 seats, with a noticeable proportion of them facing criminal allegations. Recent analysis undertaken by the non-profit Association of Democratic Reforms reveals that over thirty-eight per cent of candidates have disclosed criminal cases against themselves, with approximately twenty-three per cent facing serious charges. This statistic is reflective of broader trends observed in the last election cycle, where seventy per cent of the elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) had criminal records.

Financial Background of Candidates

Another significant factor influencing the electoral landscape is the financial status of the candidates. The data indicates that around thirty-nine per cent of the candidates are classified as crorepatis, possessing an average asset of approximately Rs 2.78 crore, marking a substantial increase of sixty-four per cent from an average of Rs 1.69 crore in 2021. Additionally, the financial worth of serving MLAs has also seen an uptick, with their average assets standing at Rs 2.75 crore for the upcoming elections.

Among the incumbents, a total of 104 MLAs are seeking re-election. Their financial status has also improved, with their average assets climbing from Rs 3.56 crore in 2021 to Rs 4.30 crore in 2026. This represents an increase of Rs 74 lakh, or twenty-one per cent, over the last five years, contributing to the perception that wealth plays a critical role in securing electoral success.

These financial insights emphasise a recurring pattern that favours candidates with substantial assets, potentially impacting voter perceptions and choices.

Gender and Age Dynamics in Candidacy

Gender representation remains a challenge, as only approximately eleven per cent of the candidates are women. Furthermore, the situation appears even less favourable among sitting MLAs, where female representation drops to a mere eight per cent. This significant underrepresentation highlights barriers that women encounter when contesting for legislative positions, indicating a need for greater inclusivity in the political landscape.

The age factor also focuses attention, with a majority of candidates falling within the middle-aged bracket. Approximately seventy per cent of the elected MLAs are aged between fifty-one and eighty years, suggesting a trend where older individuals are more likely to secure seats. This demographic detail reflects on the societal tendencies regarding age and governance.

It is evident that both gender and age are critical elements in understanding the dynamics of current and past elections in Kerala, impacting candidate selection and the overall composition of the Assembly.

Voting Trends in Recent Elections

Analysis of voter turnout trends unveils further complexities in the electoral process. Preliminary data indicate that in several constituencies, voter participation in the 2021 elections either stabilised or declined compared to the previous election in 2016. Despite this slight dip in engagement, the profile of successful candidates has not notably shifted, maintaining a consistent trend toward selecting wealthier, older individuals with criminal backgrounds.

This pattern raises questions about voter preferences and the characteristics they value in their elected representatives, reflecting long-standing electoral behaviour in Kerala.

Ultimately, the combination of criminal records, financial resources, and demographic factors paints a comprehensive picture of the current electoral landscape, revealing the complexities and challenges inherent in achieving a more equitable political representation.
