The Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award for 2026 has been awarded to Dr Agimol Pradeep, an Indian-origin nurse based in the UK. Her work has significantly helped in addressing the lack of ethnically matched organ and stem-cell donors within South Asian communities. An official announcement highlighted her achievements, noting her role as a Senior Transplant Coordinator at King’s College Hospital and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Salford.

Dr Pradeep co-founded the Upahaar initiative to tackle the unique challenges faced by South Asian patients who are in need of transplants. As a result of her efforts, Upahaar has successfully registered over 10,000 stem-cell donors. Her journey into this field began with a critical question observed during her academic research about the disparity in transplant wait times for South Asian patients compared to others.

The award ceremony took place in Kochi, India, where Dr Pradeep was presented with the accolade by Shri V. D. Satheesan, the Chief Minister of Keralam. Her selection as the winner out of more than 134,000 nurse registrations from across 214 countries underscores her influential work in the healthcare sector.

Addressing Community Misconceptions

Dr Agimol Pradeep’s research not only highlighted the shortage of ethnically matched donors but also sought to dismantle misconceptions surrounding organ donation in South Asian communities. She collaborated with community and religious leaders to raise awareness and promote donor registration. Her advocacy has been instrumental in elevating the importance of both organ and stem-cell donation.

Through her Upahaar initiative, Dr Pradeep has worked diligently to improve recognition of organ and stem-cell donation, encouraging participation from underrepresented groups. This proactive approach aims to reduce the long wait times for life-saving transplants faced by individuals from these communities.

Dr Pradeep expressed her aspirations following the award win, indicating that it represents not only personal recognition but an opportunity to further her lifelong commitment to healthcare. She highlighted the existing barriers that minority communities face regarding donor registration and intends to utilise the award’s funds to enhance the Upahaar initiative. Part of her plan includes a focus on nursing education and training to empower more healthcare professionals.

Dr Pradeep’s contributions extend beyond transplantation; she has also facilitated avenues for internationally trained nurses to re-enter the UK workforce, helping mitigate nursing shortages. Her achievements in improving patient access and community engagement have garnered further recognition, including the British Empire Medal.

The competition featured nine other finalists who have also made significant contributions to the nursing field. These individuals were evaluated through a rigorous selection process that included assessments by Ernst & Young LLP and various juries based on their professional achievements and influence. The diverse backgrounds of the finalists reflect the global impact of nursing and the vital role it plays in healthcare systems worldwide.
