Union Home Minister Amit Shah has officially inaugurated four significant road infrastructure projects in Delhi, amounting to Rs 1,941 crore. The unveiling took place on a Tuesday at a ceremony in Barapullah, attended by notable dignitaries, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, members of her cabinet, and Union Minister of State for Road Transport Harsh Malhotra.

Chief Minister Gupta noted during the event that the launch of these road projects exemplifies the effectiveness of a “double-engine government”. She stated that such a government is necessary to ensure that previously stalled projects in Delhi are back on track and accessible to the public. This collaboration between the central government and the Delhi administration, she asserted, is crucial in advancing infrastructure development.

Barapullah Phase 3 Elevated Corridor Among Key Projects

One of the major highlights of the launched projects is the long-awaited Barapullah Phase 3 elevated corridor. Minister Parvesh Verma expressed that the 11-year wait for the Barapullah flyover has finally come to an end. He remarked that for the past 18 months, the focus has solely been on governmental progress without political disputes, and this has resulted in tangible outcomes for the public.

The Barapullah Phase 3 corridor is designed to enhance connectivity between the eastern and southern parts of Delhi. It aims to link Mayur Vihar Phase-1 with AIIMS via a series of signal-free routes. Upon completion, the corridor will connect to the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan, forming a stretch of approximately 10 kilometres.

Originally approved in 2014, work on the Barapullah Phase 3 began in 2015. The project was slated for a 2017 completion but faced numerous delays and significant budget overruns. The final revised estimated cost of the project ballooned to Rs 1,635 crore. Despite these setbacks, its launch indicates a renewed commitment to improving road infrastructure.

Additional Projects to Address Traffic Congestion

Besides the Barapullah Phase 3 corridor, the other three projects unveiled include two new flyovers designed to alleviate vehicular congestion in the southern parts of Delhi and an underpass situated on the Outer Ring Road in the northern area of the city. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy by both the Centre and the Delhi government to enhance traffic conditions and overall road connectivity.

Through the inauguration of these projects, officials aim to signal their commitment to addressing the longstanding traffic issues that have reportedly plagued Delhi for decades. With a series of planned upgrades and expansions, the government hopes to modernise the transport infrastructure and improve the daily commute for residents.

The launch event marks a crucial step in the ongoing effort to revamp Delhi’s roadways, focusing on minimising travel time and optimising traffic flows for the benefit of its citizens. As the projects progress, authorities expect a substantial impact on reducing congestion, thereby enhancing the overall quality of urban transport in the capital.
