An attempted chain-snatching incident occurred on the night of Saturday, September 14, 2026, in the Civil Lines area of Ajmer. A retired doctor and his wife were the victims of this alarming event, which involved two individuals riding a motorcycle. They reportedly employed a fake pistol to threaten the woman during the attempted theft of her gold chain.

The victims, Mahendra Jain, a retired doctor, and his wife Suchitra Jain, a retired teacher, were on their way home on a scooter when the incident took place. As they travelled, the two assailants approached them with the intention of removing the chain from Suchitra’s neck.

During the attempt, the motorcycle carrying the suspects lost its balance and fell over, causing Both the scooter and the motorcycle to crash. With one of the men quickly getting back on his feet, he brandished the fake firearm in a threatening manner, which prompted him to snatch the chain from Suchitra’s neck.

Crowd Response

In the wake of the attack, Suchitra raised an alarm, which drew the attention of passers-by in the vicinity. A man who was among the first to respond confronted the suspect still situated on the motorcycle. Bravely, he knocked the assailant off the bike, which created a moment of chaos as the original suspect attempted to escape from the scene.

As more individuals gathered, the second perpetrator realised the diminishing chances of fleeing successfully. This led to him being apprehended by the crowd, who took matters into their own hands and reportedly beat him before law enforcement arrived. Video footage of the entire incident has since gone viral, highlighting the swift response of onlookers.

Police Investigation Measures

Following the incident, personnel from the Civil Lines police station were alerted and promptly arrived at the location for further assessment. Officers initiated an investigation into the attempted robbery, with a focus on gathering evidence from the scene.

Authorities are currently examining CCTV footage from nearby establishments and public cameras to ascertain the identities of the suspects involved. These efforts are critical, especially since one of the assailants managed to evade capture during the scuffle with the crowd. At this stage, no formal complaint has been lodged regarding the incident, which may complicate the investigation process.
