The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) activist Abhijeet Dipke has made a public appeal to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, urging him to end his ongoing hunger strike as fears for his health grow. This appeal comes as Wangchuk’s hunger strike, now in its 25th day, has raised significant concerns about potential health risks. Dipke emphasised the importance of Wangchuk’s life for the movement and the country.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Dipke stated that the continuation of Wangchuk’s hunger strike poses a significant threat to his well-being. He urged Wangchuk to break his fast, assuring supporters that the protests at Jantar Mantar would persist until their demands are addressed. Dipke reinforced the commitment of the protestors to maintain a peaceful approach throughout this period of demonstration.

Commitment to Non-Violent Protests

Abhijeet Dipke highlighted that the movement is committed to non-violence and accountability, stressing that their struggle will not cease even if Wangchuk chooses to end his hunger strike. He emphasised the application of principles reminiscent of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar guiding their actions. Dipke stated, “We will not do anything wrong that would defame our protest or our country,” reiterating the peaceful nature of their ongoing demonstrations.

He assured the public that the protests would continue resolutely until the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan is achieved, reflecting the dedication of the participants to their cause. The commitment to a non-violent strategy is central to their efforts, as they seek to garner support and attention for their demands.

Additionally, he appealed to other supporters to maintain the peaceful atmosphere of the protest, reflecting a collective commitment to their cause while prioritising Wangchuk’s health. The group continues to gather at Jantar Mantar to amplify their voices, aiming for change regarding educational policies and related issues.

Legal Developments Concerning Police Actions

On July 26, a hearing is set in the Delhi High Court concerning a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that seeks an independent inquiry into police actions during Wangchuk’s hunger strike. The upcoming session will address allegations regarding the suppression of his peaceful demonstration and the violation of constitutional rights, including the right to assembly.

The PIL, filed by advocate Shakeel Abbas and represented by Advocate Shakil Sheikh and Associates, names several respondents, including the Union of India and high-ranking officials of the Delhi Police. It seeks to clarify whether any fundamental rights—such as freedom of expression and assembly—were infringed by the actions taken against the protestors at Jantar Mantar.

The plea provides details about the timeline of events, asserting that Wangchuk and his fellow demonstrators began their indefinite protest on June 28, 2026. The movement reportedly remained peaceful until police intervention occurred on July 18, raising concerns over the treatment of those participating. The petition alleges that police removed participants from the site and employed excessive force during the dispersal, violating their rights to peaceful protest.
