4 Million Indians on ‘Gleeden’ an Extramarital Dating App, Bengaluru Tops User Base

The CSR Journal Magazine

The headline reflects an emerging trend concerning the growing number of Indians engaging with the extramarital dating platform Gleeden, which has recently registered four million subscribers in India. This considerable figure highlights a shift in how individuals approach companionship and personal fulfilment, contradicting traditional notions of relationships within the country.

Gleeden’s data underscores an evolving perspective towards marriage and fidelity among married Indians. A study conducted in 2024 involved 1,503 participants between the ages of 25 and 50 from various Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. The findings suggest a significant openness to non-conventional dating structures, with many participants reportedly questioning established norms. This reflects a notable transformation in societal attitudes, despite prevailing expectations regarding marriage and loyalty.

The survey indicated that over sixty per cent of the respondents were receptive to alternative dating practices, including swinging, suggesting that individuals are increasingly exploring diverse forms of relationships. This shift, observed across various demographics, represents a departure from traditional values, portraying a more nuanced understanding of personal fulfilment.

Insights from User Data

Gleeden’s latest statistics reveal significant insights into the platform’s user base and engagement patterns. According to the data, men constitute sixty-five per cent of the users, while women make up thirty-five per cent. A majority of users are reportedly married or in long-term relationships. Notably, female participation has surged, increasing by one hundred and forty-eight per cent over the past two years, indicating a growing willingness among women to explore such platforms.

Patterns of user engagement show that Indian subscribers spend between one to one-and-a-half hours daily on the app, with peak usage occurring during midday hours and late evening. This suggests that many users are leveraging breaks in their daily routines to engage in these interactions, highlighting how discreet online spaces are becoming integrated into daily life.

Furthermore, men tend to express interest in women aged twenty-five to thirty, whereas women often seek men in the thirty to forty age range, indicating a preference for established professionals. This reflects an intersection of traditional gender roles with contemporary dating practices, as users look for partners who meet specific criteria.

Expansion Beyond Urban Centres

While metropolitan areas remain at the forefront of the trend, users from smaller cities are increasingly joining as well. Bengaluru leads the user statistics with eighteen per cent, followed by Hyderabad at seventeen per cent, Delhi at eleven per cent, Mumbai at nine per cent, and Pune at seven per cent. However, the rise of users from cities such as Lucknow, Coimbatore, and Guwahati signifies that discreet dating is becoming a nationwide phenomenon rather than being confined to larger urban centres.

The growing number of female users is particularly noteworthy, with the platform attributing this to a rising sense of independence among women who wish to explore their choices freely. By providing complimentary access for women, Gleeden aims to foster a supportive environment that empowers female users to engage on their own terms.

Overall, this increase questions long-held assumptions about empowerment and emotional needs within existing relationships. As Sybil Shiddell, Country Manager of Gleeden India, noted, many individuals are using these platforms for self-discovery and emotional validation, even as traditional views of marriage remain prevalent in society.
