Wrestler Sushil Kumar Moves Delhi High Court for Bail in Murder Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar has approached the Delhi High Court to request bail in connection with the murder case of Sagar Dhankar that occurred in May 2021. Kumar’s bail application is scheduled for a hearing on February 20, with the case being presented before Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani.

Previous Bail Applications

Prior to this, a court in Rohini had denied Kumar’s request for bail on February 6. His previous bail had been revoked by the Supreme Court last year, which also directed that he could reapply for bail should there be a change in circumstances. This comes after a range of court proceedings has taken place regarding the case.

Arguments in Court

During the previous bail hearing, Additional Sessions Judge Sushil Kumar had deliberated over the representations made by the defendant’s counsel, the Delhi police, and the complainant. The opposition to the bail plea was voiced by Advocate Joshini Tuli, representing the father of the victim, who argued against the notion of granting regular bail based on the circumstances at that time.

Evidence Examination Status

The defendant’s legal representation noted that all critical witnesses had now been examined in the Rohini court, presenting a case for the renewal of the bail application. The court proceedings have indicated that 222 prosecution witnesses are involved in this case, with 42 key witnesses, including an injured party, already testifying.

Health Concerns and Judicial Custody

In support of the bail request, it was argued that continuing to detain Sushil Kumar in judicial custody serves no beneficial purpose and may adversely affect his health. The current stage of the trial involves the gathering of prosecution evidence, leading the defense to assert that there is no threat of him attempting to influence or tamper with the evidence presented.

The Background of the Case

The case revolves around allegations from the night between May 4 and 5, 2021, when multiple individuals, including Sagar Dhankar, were allegedly abducted and attacked at the parking lot of Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. Following the incident, Sagar Dhankar reportedly succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.

Athletic Achievements

Sushil Kumar is a celebrated athlete, having received notable accolades such as the Arjuna Award in 2005, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2009, and the Padma Shri in 2011. His accomplishments have been significant in the wrestling arena, adding to the public interest surrounding his current legal challenges.
