“Women Are Only for Sleeping with Husbands”: Kerala CPM leader’s shocking sexist victory speech sparks fury

A member of CPM, ruling party in Kerala, Sayed Ali Majeed, who won municipal election last week, made a controversial remark during an event in Malappuram district. In the event attended by hundreds of Left workers, this included women, Sayed said that the Muslim League is fielding women candidates in local body polls for votes, he said, “They displayed women to win votes…” , strangely to this derogatory remark audiences clapped and cheered. He did not stop at that remark, he went forward and shamed women by saying that, “We have also have married women at home… but not to show them off to win votes. Let them sit at home… marry women to sleep with and make kids.” He even talked about the background and lineage of women, “That is why families traditionally verify lineage and background while arranging marriages…”

Who is Sayed Ali Majeed?

In the local poll, Majeed secured 666 votes, he defeated a candidate from Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Before the polls he had stepped down as the CPM local secretary and then appeared as an independent candidate in the election.

In his winning event, Majeed made derogatory remarks against women and also shared a video by the president of the Women’s League. After his remark, he even said that those entering politics should be mentally prepared to take criticism. Majeed’s sexiest comments didn’t end, he continued to say, “Those who have courage to listen to criticism should enter politics, while others should remain at home as housewives.” To Majeed’s comment, no official statements have been released by CPM leadership.


Municipal corporations in Kerala

In the recent municipal corporation elections in Kerala, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) faced a major setback, Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) turned victorious by winning 4 out of 6 seats in the municipal corporations. UDF won two new seats in Kochi and Kollam cities and retained the earlier seats in Kannur. This time the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) also won a seat in one of the key municipal corporations of Thiruvananthapuram. In the last election, the CPI(M) had 51 seats, NDA 35, and the UDF 10. But this time when the council expanded the seats to 101, NDA won by securing a majority of 50 seats, LDF fell to 29, the UDF won 19, and the last 2 seats went to an independent candidate.
