Wipro Grows AI Workforce

Wipro is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) operations with a dedicated team of over 2,000 engineers. This initiative is part of the company’s strategy to enhance its AI-led business as clients increasingly seek technology solutions that deliver measurable results. The details regarding this expansion were shared by Wipro’s CEO and Managing Director, Srinivas Pallia, during a press conference following the company’s earnings report.

The engineering team includes Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs), who collaborate closely with clients to develop and implement AI solutions tailored to specific business requirements. This approach aims to ensure that the technology effectively addresses the unique challenges faced by clients in various sectors.

Wipro established the AI-Native Business & Platforms Unit on April 1, marking a significant step in broadening its AI offerings alongside traditional IT services. This unit is currently engaged in projects across diverse industries, including banking, healthcare, and petrochemicals, showcasing the versatility of AI applications.

Client Projects Highlight AI Applications

Pallia highlighted three notable client projects that exemplify how Wipro is leveraging AI technology. One project involves the development of a small language model for a bank in the United States, aimed at enhancing customer interactions. Another initiative focuses on an AI-driven digital transformation for a petrochemical firm in the Middle East, optimising operational efficiency.

Additionally, Wipro is working on an AI model designed to streamline enrolment and billing processes for a healthcare provider in the United States. These projects illustrate the company’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions that meet the specific needs of its clients.

Furthermore, Wipro is developing smaller AI models tailored for specific sectors such as insurance, aviation, and wealth management. These models are being integrated with AI agents and tools that coordinate their functions, facilitating the incorporation of AI into the daily operations of client businesses.

Plans for Increased Fresher Recruitment

In conjunction with its AI initiatives, Wipro anticipates a rise in fresher recruitment during the second half of the financial year 2026-27. This decision comes as IT services companies reassess their workforce requirements in response to evolving client demands. For recent graduates aspiring to enter the technology sector, this trend presents an opportunity worth noting.

Wipro aims to recruit approximately 7,500 fresh graduates from campuses annually. However, according to Chief Human Resources Officer Saurabh Govil, the number of new hires in FY27 may slightly fall short of this target. This reflects the ongoing adjustments within the industry as companies align their hiring strategies with market conditions.

The skills required for roles in AI-related services are also evolving. Knowledge in software engineering, expertise in AI, and the ability to address real-world business challenges are becoming increasingly important. Wipro is investing in various emerging areas of AI, including computing infrastructure, AI foundry services, and smart devices, as well as manufacturing-related design services.
