The CSR Journal Magazine

Federal Bank has announced a significant increase in its net profit for the July-September quarter of the financial year 2026-27, achieving a record Rs 1,386 crore. This represents a year-on-year growth of 45.1 per cent, attributed to robust net interest income, enhanced fee income, and improved asset quality. The bank’s net interest income (NII) grew by 26.4 per cent to reach Rs 3,153.4 crore, indicating strong operational performance.

Additionally, the bank’s other income surged by 37.7 per cent to Rs 1,490.4 crore, with fee income specifically rising by 31.9 per cent to Rs 1,167.7 crore. The net interest margin (NIM) also expanded, increasing by 26 basis points to 3.32 per cent during this quarter. K V S Manian, the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, reiterated expectations for a gradual improvement in NIM, although he acknowledged that the growth would not be linear.

Asset quality has shown marked improvement, with the gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio declining to 1.32 per cent as of September 30, 2026, down from 1.52 per cent as of June 30, 2026. The net NPA ratio also fell slightly to 0.17 per cent from 0.18 per cent, both figures representing the lowest levels in a decade.

Deposits and Advances Growth

The bank’s total deposits increased by 18.6 per cent, reaching Rs 3.43 trillion. Notably, low-cost current account and savings account (CASA) deposits grew by 22.6 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1.1 trillion, resulting in a CASA ratio of 32.04 per cent, which is an increase of 103 basis points compared to the previous year. Non-resident deposits, including NRE and other non-resident accounts, rose by 26.6 per cent to Rs 1.19 trillion.

In terms of lending, gross advances surpassed the Rs 3 trillion mark, reaching Rs 3.02 trillion. Among various lending segments, gold loans grew by 37.1 per cent year-on-year, while loans against property (LAP) saw an increase of 32.2 per cent. Credit card advances rose by 28.3 per cent, and commercial banking advances increased by 25.5 per cent. Corporate and institutional banking advances also rose by 17.2 per cent, amounting to Rs 1.05 trillion.

The bank’s capital adequacy ratio stood at 16.84 per cent at the end of September 2026, with a Tier-I capital ratio of 15.76 per cent, indicating a strong capital position.

Future Outlook and Regulatory Considerations

Addressing potential impacts from the insurance regulator’s proposed consultation paper regarding the distribution framework, Manian indicated that the bank is currently evaluating the implications for both its fee income and its life insurance subsidiary, Ageas Federal Life Insurance. He noted that while there could be an impact, it is premature to quantify it until the final regulations are established.

Manian mentioned that the bank is in the process of assessing the draft guidelines and considering the options available to its associate company regarding its business model. He highlighted that the bank is continuously exploring opportunities across various financial services sectors, including core and universal banking, although there are no immediate plans to disclose specific initiatives.

In summary, Federal Bank’s strong financial performance in Q2FY27 reflects its effective management strategies and growth in key areas, positioning it well for future developments in the banking sector.
