US Supreme Court Rejects 26/11 Attack Accused Plea on Extradition Stay

The US Supreme Court has rejected 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana’s plea seeking a stay on his extradition to India. This makes him a step closer to being handed over to the Indian authorities.

Rana is a 64-year-old Canadian national of Pakistani origin and is currently lodged at a Metropolitan Detention Centre in Los Angeles. He is also known to be associated with Pakistani American terrorist David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. To plan the attacks, Headley first did a recce of Mumbai by posing as an employee of Rana’s immigration consultancy.

Haebus Corpus Plea

Currently, Rana has submitted an ‘Emergency Application for a Stay Pending Litigation Petition for Rate of Haebus Corpus’ on February 27, 2025. This plea was denied by the judge earlier in the month.

Rana then renewed his emergency application plea that was previously addressed to Judge Elena Kagan. The renewed request application has been directed to U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts.

According to an order published on the Supreme Court website, Rana’s renewed application was distributed for conference on April 4, and the application was referred to the court. A notice on the Supreme Court website on Monday said that ‘application denied by the court’.
