US Military Options Considered for Iranian Islands Amid Hormuz Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump is exploring various military actions against Iran, concentrating on several strategically significant islands located in the Persian Gulf. These islands hold considerable importance due to their proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for global energy shipments, and their role in Iran’s oil production and military capabilities. Military officials have indicated that acquiring and maintaining control over Iranian territory may entail greater risks than previous US efforts in the region.

Pentagon Developments

Reports indicate the Pentagon is formulating plans for a decisive military response, potentially involving both ground forces and aerial bombardments. Some proposals suggest intercepting ships near the Strait of Hormuz or launching an invasion of specific islands vital to Iran’s oil export activities, particularly Kharg Island, which is critical for the nation’s economy.

Kharg Island’s Significance

Kharg Island, situated about 15 miles offshore from Iran’s mainland, manages the export of approximately 90% of the country’s crude oil. The island is also home to freshwater resources that sustain the local population and essential infrastructure. Its deepwater port allows for sizable oil tankers to dock, and any military action targeting the island could swiftly disrupt Iranian oil exports, predominantly directed towards China. Nevertheless, capturing and holding Kharg would expose US military personnel to greater danger compared to existing air campaigns. Consequently, US officials are also contemplating a blockade around the island as a potential strategy to compel Iran into negotiations.

Larak Island’s Role

Larak Island, positioned at the narrowest section of the Strait of Hormuz, serves a pivotal role in Iran’s oil export operations. It is equipped with an intricate network of bunkers and maritime attack vessels designed to monitor and secure the strait. A potential US takeover of Larak could restrict Iran’s capacity to threaten shipping routes and mine the passage, thereby aiding in the disruption of Iranian control over maritime traffic. However, Larak is heavily fortified, presenting a substantial challenge for any military operation.

Abu Musa and the Tunbs Islands

The islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb are strategically located near the western approach to the Strait of Hormuz, positioned between Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Although these islands are claimed by the UAE, Iran has maintained a military presence there since 1971. They have been outfitted with missile systems, drones, and capabilities for laying mines. The Pentagon is said to have considered the possibility of seizing Abu Musa. Meanwhile, Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has stated that Iranian intelligence indicates preparations for an operation targeting one of the islands, warning that any military action would provoke severe retaliation against critical infrastructure in the aggressor nation.

Qeshm Island’s Strategic Value

Qeshm Island is recognized as the largest island in the Persian Gulf and lies off Iran’s southern coastline near the Strait of Hormuz. It is reported to store anti-ship missiles, mines, drones, and various maritime attack vessels in underground facilities. Described by some as “a cork in the world’s most vital energy transit passage,” Qeshm Island plays an essential role in regional security. There have been accusations from Iran alleging that the US targeted a desalination facility on the island early in the conflict, impacting water supply to nearby villages, claims that the US government has denied. Covering approximately 558 square miles, Qeshm presents significant challenges as a military target, with no evidence suggesting a planned occupation at this time.
