US Military Loses 81 Aircraft and Drones Worth $3.3 Billion in Iran Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

The US military has faced substantial losses, with at least 81 aircraft, drones, and helicopters reported lost or damaged since the onset of the conflict with Iran, totalling up to $3.3 billion in value. This information comes from a new report released by the Congressional Research Service (CRS). The report, highlighted by the New York Post, suggests that these losses may significantly impact the operational capabilities of the US military in ongoing and future missions.

The losses encompass a range of the military’s most sophisticated aircraft and unmanned systems, which have been crucial for American military operations throughout the war. Notable among these losses are 12 F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets, one F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter, an E-3 Sentry surveillance aircraft, and numerous MQ-9 Reaper drones.

Details of Specific Aircraft Lost

In addition to the F-15E losses, the report indicates that at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones have been lost since hostilities began. The cost of each Reaper is estimated between $30 million and $50 million, depending on its specific configuration. The MQ-9 is primarily used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations, as well as carrying out precision strikes. An Air Force general reported in May that the operational Reaper fleet had decreased to 135 units.

Another notable loss mentioned in the report is that of an F-35A Lightning II, valued at over $92 million, which was damaged after encountering Iranian fire on March 19. As a fifth-generation stealth fighter, the F-35 is equipped with various advanced systems, making its loss or need for repairs a significant concern for the military.

Broader Impact on US Military Operations

Beyond the F-15E and Reaper drones, the US military has also experienced losses in various other support aircraft. An E-3 Sentry, a crucial airborne early warning and control platform worth approximately $270 million, is included in the list of losses. This aircraft is based on the Boeing 707 airframe and plays an essential role in command-and-control and surveillance missions.

The operational status of the E-3 fleet is vital as the US had 32 of these aircraft in operation as of 2015. The report also highlights losses among aircraft used for combat support, including two A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft, seven KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft, alongside various other drone and helicopter losses, such as one AH-64 Apache and multiple MQ-1 multi-role drones.

The cumulative loss of these aircraft puts additional strain on the already limited resources of the US military. Overall, the report underscores the scale and financial implications of the material losses encountered by the US military during the Iranian conflict. While some damaged aircraft may have been repaired and returned to service, the significant destruction of high-value assets places added pressure on US military operations and capabilities in the region.
