US Congress Moves to Honour Pilot Smit Machchhar for Averting Flydubai Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who played a crucial role in preventing a terrorist attack on a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv, is now being formally acknowledged by the US Congress. A bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced a House resolution aimed at honouring Machchhar, along with the crew and passengers of flydubai Flight 1073, for their extraordinary actions during the incident that took place on September 30. The resolution, designated H. Res. 1612, was put forth on October 5 by Congressman Josh Gottheimer from New Jersey and has been referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Among the co-sponsors of the resolution are Republicans Michael McCaul and Don Bacon. The document commends Machchhar specifically for his remarkable bravery in safeguarding those onboard the aircraft. It also gives recognition to off-duty pilots, cabin crew, and passengers who assisted in securing the cockpit and safely navigating the aircraft back to the ground.

Investigation Into Attacker’s Background

The congressional recognition coincides with ongoing investigations into the attacker’s actions aboard the Boeing 737. Initial reports identify the first officer as Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani national, but official confirmation of all details regarding his identity has yet to be issued. Investigations are expanding beyond the events of the flight; authorities worldwide are scrutinising his movements, educational background, training, and any potential ties to extremist groups.

According to information released by New Zealand Police, the co-pilot undertook part of his flight training in New Zealand between November 2018 and May 2019, placing that period under review by local authorities. Furthermore, Australian counterterrorism units are assessing possible connections to Australia, as reports suggest the suspect pursued studies there after arriving on a student visa.

Additionally, concerns have arisen regarding the alleged intent of the attacker to crash the aircraft into Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport. This information, sourced from interviews with UAE interrogators, is still subject to investigation and has not been independently validated. Investigators aim to uncover what might have driven the attacker, alongside examining if he had extremist affiliations or if he received any external support for his actions.

Calls for Presidential Recognition for Machchhar

The resolution introduced in Congress has sparked calls for Smit Machchhar to receive further recognition from high-ranking officials in the US government. Conservative activist Laura Loomer has publicly urged President Donald Trump to acknowledge the Indian pilot’s heroism. In a conversation with India Today, she described Machchhar’s actions as deserving the utmost recognition.

Loomer proposed that Machchhar and other individuals who assisted in restraining the attacker be invited to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami. She suggested a commemorative event at the summit that would involve President Trump, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to honour the individuals who played key roles in preventing mass casualties during the incident.

Amidst the ongoing discussions surrounding the event, there is widespread support for recognising the bravery displayed by Machchhar and the other passengers who helped avert disaster. These sentiments emphasise the need for formal acknowledgment of their actions by international leaders.
