‘They Tried to Electrocute Me’: UP Woman Writes Suicide Note on Her Body, Blames Husband’s Family for Dowry Torture

The CSR Journal Magazine

A deeply disturbing case has come to light from Uttar Pradesh that underscores the continued menace of dowry-related abuse. A 28-year-old woman, Manisha in Baghpat district died by suicide on Tuesday night. The woman left behind a chilling suicide note written all over her body. Manisha, consumed poison at her maternal home in Rathauda village. The area comes under the jurisdiction of Chhaprauli police station.

Note Written on Arms, Legs, and Stomach

According to police, before taking the extreme step, Manisha used a pen to write a suicide note on her arms, legs, and stomach. In the note Manisha directly blamed her husband, Kundan, and his family for the abuse that led to her death. In the note, written in Hindi, she clearly stated, “Kundan and his family are responsible for my death.”

In addition to the suicide note on her body, Manisha recorded an emotional video. In the video she detailed the mental and physical torture she suffered over the last year. She alleged that her husband, along with his mother, father, and brother, had constantly harassed her for dowry. She also claimed that she was assaulted despite her family spending nearly ₹20 lakh on the wedding. The victim’s family also gifted a Bullet motorcycle to the groom.

Shocking Allegations of Abuse

In the video, a visibly distressed Manisha claimed she was pressured to arrange for a car and a large sum of cash. She also accused her in-laws of beating her, forcing her to undergo an abortion. She also alleged that her in-laws attempted to electrocute her when she refused to meet their demands.

The emotional clip is now with the Uttar Pradesh police. The video shows her crying and holding her husband’s family accountable for her suffering.

Returned Home, But Found No Peace

According to reports, Manisha, unable to bear the ongoing harassment, returned to her parental home in July 2024. Her family had started discussing divorce proceedings just four days before her death. However, Manisha insisted that she wouldn’t sign the divorce papers until the dowry items her family gave were returned. Her statement reflects not only her pain but also the burden many women carry in silence under social and legal pressure.

Investigation Underway

Following the incident, the authorities have launched an investigation based on the video and the writings on her body. Police officials confirmed that these will be treated as key evidence in the case. Preliminary reports suggest charges under the Dowry Prohibition Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code may be filed.

Community in Shock, Demands Justice

Meanwhile, the tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local community. The incident has also renewed national conversations around dowry-related violence. Activists and neighbors have called for swift justice for the victim. People are also demanding for stronger measures to protect women from similar abuse.

This tragic case serves as yet another reminder of the urgency to address dowry harassment, not just as a legal issue, but as a societal failure that continues to destroy lives.
