Two women died following caesarean sections conducted at the District Women’s Hospital in Bundi, Rajasthan. The deaths occurred after the patients were subsequently transferred to private hospitals in Kota, prompting an investigation by local authorities. The unfortunate incidents were reported on Friday, highlighting concerns over the medical procedures administered at the facility.

The deceased, identified as Kavita Kumawat, aged 32, from Tonk district and Varsha Sain, aged 28, from Bundi district, were admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. Both underwent surgery for C-sections on Wednesday. Although the newborns were reportedly in good health, both women’s conditions worsened a short period after the operations.

Following their deteriorating health, the women were referred to the Government Medical College in Kota. Subsequently, their families opted to transfer them to separate private healthcare providers in the city, where both women passed away during treatment late on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigation and Hospital Response

The District Women’s Hospital’s operation theatre has been sealed for comprehensive testing, sterilisation, and sampling, ensuring thorough investigation and infection control. L N Meena, the principal medical officer at the Bundi hospital, confirmed that a gynaecologist, Chandresh Meena, who performed the surgeries, has been placed under awaiting posting orders pending further inquiries.

Adding to the severity of the situation, two additional patients from Bundi, named Jeenet, aged 20, and Pinky, aged 23, also experienced complications at the Bundi hospital on Thursday. They were transferred to the Government Medical College in Kota, where they are being treated and are reportedly stable as of the latest updates.

An inquiry committee, consisting of the Bundi Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), the chief medical and health officer, and the head of gynaecology at the hospital, has been established to investigate the circumstances leading to the tragic outcomes. The decision to seal the operation theatre is expected to last at least two days to facilitate necessary procedures and assessments.

Immediate Measures and Public Response

In the wake of these events, the hospital authorities have made arrangements to manage potential emergencies for the ten women currently admitted with high-risk pregnancies. Should any of these patients require an emergency C-section during the sealed period, alternative measures will be instituted to either utilise the general operation theatre or refer them to healthcare facilities in Kota.

The families of the deceased women have called for a thorough and impartial investigation, seeking accountability for the deaths. They have further demanded financial compensation set at Rs 50 lakh for each family as a response to the tragic losses endured.

As investigations unfold, the medical community in Rajasthan and the families impacted by these events are awaiting further developments regarding the circumstances and potential repercussions for those involved. The situation underscores the critical need for vigilant healthcare practices, particularly in obstetric settings.
