Approximately thirty individuals from India have been detained for residing illegally in the United States and working as commercial truck drivers. This action was taken during a federal operation, highlighting the ongoing enforcement of immigration laws in the country.

According to a statement released by the US Customs and Border Protection, from May 11 to May 15, a total of fifty-two individuals were arrested by the Border Patrol agents in the Yuma Sector of Arizona as part of ‘Operation Checkmate.’ Among those apprehended, thirty-six were found operating semi-trucks without legal permission.

Of the thirty-six illegal truck drivers detained, thirty were identified as being from India while the remaining six hailed from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia. The arrested individuals reportedly held commercial driver’s licences issued from various states, including California, New York, Washington, and Virginia, although some lacked any legal documentation for driving.

Manifestations of Employment Status

Most of the detained drivers possessed employment authorisation documents that were reportedly issued during the administration of former President Joe Biden. However, these documents were no longer valid at the time of the arrests. All individuals have been processed in accordance with federal laws, and a deportation process is currently underway.

Operation Checkmate is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing public safety through strict enforcement of immigration regulations. It seeks to identify and apprehend individuals illegally operating commercial motor vehicles throughout the United States.

Acting Chief Patrol Agent of the US Border Patrol’s Yuma Sector, Dustin Caudle, emphasised the operation’s importance in safeguarding communities and ensuring roadway safety. He stated that federal agents continuously patrol to prevent potentially dangerous situations arising from the presence of unauthorised drivers.

Historical Context and Implications

This operation comes in the wake of previous directives issued under the administration of President Donald Trump, which mandated that unqualified foreign drivers would be prohibited from obtaining licences to operate commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses.

In recent months, there have been several incidents involving Indian-origin truck drivers who have been charged with causing fatal accidents while behind the wheel of commercial vehicles in the US. These occurrences have heightened the scrutiny surrounding the issue of illegal immigrant drivers and their impact on public safety.

The arrests form part of ongoing efforts by federal authorities to monitor and regulate the activities of foreign nationals within the trucking industry, reflecting a growing concern over compliance with immigration laws and the qualifications of individuals operating heavy vehicles in the country.
