The Congress party has put forward the names of sitting Rajya Sabha Member Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Telangana Chief Minister’s advisor, Vem Narender Reddy, for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. This decision comes as two seats in Telangana will become vacant following the retirement of Singhvi and Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MP KR Suresh Reddy on April 9.

Former MLA Vem Narender Reddy expressed his appreciation toward the Congress leadership after receiving the party’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections. He conveyed his heartfelt thanks to several key figures, including Sonia Gandhi, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, among others, via a post on the platform X.

Abhishek Singhvi is anticipated to retain his position, considering the Congress party’s strength within the Telangana Legislative Assembly. The official polling date for these biennial elections to the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) is set for March 16, with the vote counting scheduled to occur on the same day at 5 PM.

Details of the Election Process

A press release outlined that a total of 37 Rajya Sabha seats from ten states, including Telangana, will be filled through this election. The terms for these 37 members, previously elected from states such as Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana, will conclude in April, allowing for new candidates to be voted in.

The election process will officially commence with the issuance of notifications on February 26. Candidates can submit their nominations until March 5. The scrutiny of these nominations will take place on March 6, and candidates will have until March 9 to withdraw their nominations if they so choose.
