The Telangana government has granted permission for Muslim government employees across the state to leave offices and schools at 4 pm during the holy month of Ramzan, enabling them to observe religious practices associated with fasting.

The order, issued through Memo No. 677/Poll.B/26 dated February 17, 2026, applies to a wide range of personnel, including government employees, teachers, contract and outsourcing staff, as well as employees of boards, corporations and public sector undertakings.

Facilitation For Fasting Observance

Ramzan involves fasting from dawn to sunset, culminating in the evening meal known as iftar. The early departure is intended to allow employees sufficient time to return home, prepare for prayers and break their fast without affecting workplace responsibilities.

Officials said the measure aims to balance professional commitments with religious obligations during the month, which is considered sacred in Islam.

Applies Across Departments

The facility will be available to Muslim staff working in government offices, educational institutions, public sector units and various state-run bodies throughout Telangana.

Teachers and contract employees, who often follow fixed schedules, have also been included in the order to ensure uniform implementation across sectors.

Continuation Of Established Practice

The state government has implemented similar arrangements in previous years, making the provision a routine administrative measure during Ramzan.

This year, Ramzan is expected to begin on February 18, 2026, and will continue for about 29 to 30 days, depending on the sighting of the moon. The early exit rule will remain in effect throughout the fasting period.

Officials emphasised that the decision reflects the government’s commitment to accommodating religious observances while maintaining the functioning of public services.
