Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is set to inaugurate the Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, a social welfare initiative designed to provide a one-gram gold ring to newborns in government hospitals. The scheme will be officially launched on Monday at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, where the Chief Minister will present rings to 25 infants born on that day. This initiative aims to celebrate the arrival of new life and support families in Tamil Nadu.

Details of the Scheme

The one-gram gold rings, which will be made of 22-carat gold, are intended for eligible newborns delivered in state-run medical facilities. To qualify, the mothers must be permanent residents of Tamil Nadu. The scheme was initially scheduled to commence on the birth anniversary of the late Chief Minister CN Annadurai. However, its launch was postponed due to the Chief Minister’s overseas travel commitments.

The Chief Minister, arriving via special flight, will unveil the initiative at the GRH auditorium before visiting the maternity ward to personally distribute the rings. The distribution will occur when the newborns are discharged from the hospitals. The scheme has an annual funding allocation of Rs 755.83 crore, with 1.28 lakh gold rings prepared for initial distribution.

According to government sources, the rings will feature unique serial numbers and will be given out in tamper-proof packaging. While the scheme is set to be implemented across Tamil Nadu, areas under the Maduranthakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies will be excluded from this rollout, as by-elections are expected on October 6.

Eligibility and Expected Outcomes

To be eligible for the scheme, beneficiaries must be registered under the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation system and possess a Reproductive and Child Health ID. Officials stated that the scheme is expected to foster public trust in government healthcare services and encourage safer delivery practices in hospitals.

Tamil Nadu witnesses approximately 7.80 lakh births annually, with data from the National Family Health Survey-6 indicating that 99.9 per cent of these deliveries occur in healthcare institutions. Notably, around 4.20 lakh deliveries, equivalent to 53 per cent, are conducted in government hospitals, and 90 per cent of governmental deliveries occur in Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care centres.

In every district, a specialised monitoring committee led by the district Collector has been established to supervise local implementation of the scheme and ensure transparency in the distribution of the gold rings. Work orders have been executed with Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers for the supply of these rings, aligning with the ruling TVK’s pre-poll promise.

Additional Activities Scheduled for the Day

On the same day as the scheme’s launch, CM Vijay is also expected to inaugurate the renovated Gandhi Memorial Museum, where he will assess the upgraded facilities. Although not officially confirmed, he is anticipated to visit the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, which has recently undergone consecration. These activities highlight the government’s commitment to community engagement and infrastructure development in the region.
