The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay, has expressed his congratulations to squash player Abhay Singh following his achievement of securing a silver medal in the men’s singles event at the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. In honour of this accomplishment, CM Vijay has declared a financial reward of Rs 50 lakh for Singh, acknowledging his contribution to the sport and the state.

Abhay Singh’s journey to the final was commendable, and he faced Malaysia’s defending champion, Ng Eain Yow, during the gold-medal match on Sunday. Despite his efforts, Singh, who was seeded second, lost to Yow with scores of 9-11, 5-11, and 5-11, thus earning the silver medal. This achievement makes him only the second Indian male athlete, following Saurav Ghosal, to win a singles silver medal at the Asian Games.

In his message, CM Vijay noted, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to squash player Abhay Singh, who has brought pride to Tamil Nadu and India.” He further affirmed that the government would provide a cash incentive in recognition of Singh’s remarkable feat, highlighting the importance of such successes for inspiring future generations of athletes.

Previous Rewards to Athletes

Abhay Singh is the most recent Tamil Nadu athlete to receive incentives from the state government amidst the ongoing Asian Games. Earlier, CM Vijay announced a cash reward of Rs 75 lakh for cricketer G Kamalini, who contributed to India’s women’s T20 team winning the gold medal in Japan. In the final, India triumphed over Sri Lanka by a significant margin of 147 runs, with stellar performances from Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh.

In addition to Kamalini, rewards were also given to athletes Vithya Ramraj and Vishal T K, who achieved silver in the mixed 4x400m relay at the Games. Their team clocked a time of 3:14.46, finishing behind Bahrain, which set a new Games record at 3:12.87. These financial incentives reflect the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to recognising the efforts of its athletes and supporting their endeavours.

The Chief Minister has also announced a reward of Rs 30 lakh each for squash players Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar, following their bronze medal in mixed doubles. These contributions have significantly added to India’s medal tally in squash at the 2026 Asian Games.
