Sujeet Kalkal’s Stunning Asian Games Comeback Ends India’s Eight-Year Wait For Wrestling Gold

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian wrestler Sujeet Kalkal’s path has been marked by remarkable comebacks, particularly after missing an opportunity to compete at the Paris Olympics two years ago. In what turned out to be a challenging journey to the Asian Olympic qualifying tournament in Kyrgyzstan, Sujeet faced delays due to floods that left him stranded in Dubai for three days. The unfortunate circumstances caused him to miss the qualifying event, which laid heavy on his aspirations.

Fast forward to the recent Asian Games in Nagoya, Sujeet was again at a critical juncture. He found himself competing in the finals of the men’s 65kg freestyle wrestling category. Facing Tajikistan’s Abdulmazhid Kudiev, the stakes were higher than ever as he trailed 2-9, with time running out. Despite the daunting situation, a significant turnaround was on the horizon for the young wrestler.

A Historic Comeback

Demonstrating tenacity, Sujeet transformed the match with an extraordinary scoring spree that saw him overturn a 7-2 deficit, leading the contest 10-9 in his favour. As the final moments ticked away, he showcased remarkable composure in defending his slim lead against an opponent desperate to regain control. Ultimately, Sujeet secured gold, ending an eight-year wait for India in wrestling at the Asian Games.

His victory now places him among the distinguished few, becoming only the third Indian to clinch gold in this category at the Asian Games, alongside notable wrestlers like Yogeshwar Dutt and Bajrang Punia. Reflecting on his performance, Sujeet expressed that his focus was not on past setbacks but rather on the fight at hand. He mentioned in a virtual interaction that his mantra was to keep pressing forward and give his utmost effort.

Future Aspirations and Upcoming Competitions

Sujeet regards his recent achievement as his most significant milestone thus far, yet his aspirations extend beyond the Asian Games gold. With the World Wrestling Championships on the horizon, set to take place in Kazakhstan from October 24 to November 1, he has ambitious goals. In his view, excelling at the World Championships would further enhance his athletic credentials, although the ultimate dream remains winning an Olympic medal.

As he prepares for upcoming competitions, Sujeet acknowledged how the upcoming World Championships coincide with the Diwali festival. He expressed that winning a medal would feel like celebrating the festival itself. Having spent the past few years away from home during Diwali, he noted that any significant achievement in sports serves as a personal celebration. He recounted his father’s encouraging words, suggesting that bringing home gold would make it the best celebration possible.

With an unwavering commitment to his sport and a mindset focused on future competitions, Sujeet is motivated to continue his ascent in wrestling. As he approaches the World Championships with determination, he remains hopeful that the results will align with his desire to celebrate both success and the festival of Diwali in equal measure.
