Shreyas Iyer Reflects on Recovery From Injury Ahead of IPL 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shreyas Iyer has shared insights into his challenging recovery journey, as he readies himself to captain Punjab Kings in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The Indian ODI vice-captain described the rehabilitation process following a serious injury as one of the most difficult times in his career. During a press conference held in Chandigarh, Iyer detailed the impact of the injury on his fitness and discussed his aspirations for the season ahead. He stated, “It is always challenging to come back after an injury. I had lost around seven kilos and it took a lot of effort to gain that weight back.” Iyer expressed his appreciation for overcoming this challenge, emphasizing his excitement to proudly represent his team once again.

Details of the Injury

Iyer’s injury occurred during a series against Australia in October 2025, resulting in a spleen injury that sidelined him for almost two months. This forced him to miss important matches, including the ODI series against South Africa and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, significantly disrupting his performance momentum at a critical time in the season. He underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence located in Bengaluru. His return to competitive cricket was marked by a strong performance, where he scored 82 runs off 53 balls for Mumbai during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, indicating his readiness to return to the field.

Recent Performance and Current Focus

Although Iyer’s initial performances following his return were met with mixed reactions, he gradually improved his form and regained match fitness, preparing for the international cricket schedule. As he sets his sights on the IPL, Iyer is determined to lead Punjab Kings in their pursuit of the championship. Last year, PBKS came close to ending their title drought, reaching the final before losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. With a stable core and positive momentum from the previous season, the franchise aims to improve this year.

Leadership and Ambitions

Iyer’s goal is to build on last season’s progress and secure the franchise its first IPL title. Recognized for his leadership capabilities with Punjab Kings as well as Kolkata Knight Riders, where he guided them to the IPL 2024 championship before his transition to Punjab, Iyer returns to the captaincy role not only as a player who has faced a significant setback but also as a leader eager to achieve success for his team in IPL 2026.
