Shimla Municipal Corporation Initiates Extensive Anti-Rabies Vaccination Campaign for Stray Dogs

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Shimla Municipal Corporation has commenced a significant anti-rabies vaccination initiative targeting stray dogs in the city. This campaign, which began on October 3, aims to inoculate over 4,000 dogs over a duration of ten days, concluding around October 12-13. Conducted across all 34 wards of Shimla, the effort seeks to enhance vaccination rates and curb the spread of rabies among the city’s stray dog population.

This substantial endeavour is brought to fruition through collaboration with various stakeholders, including animal welfare groups, veterinary students, and numerous volunteers. The campaign has mobilised around nine teams, with three focused on net-catching the dogs and the others employing hand-catching techniques. The local involvement extends to volunteers from different states such as Rajasthan and Punjab.

The vaccination drive has not been without its challenges, as volunteers face the risk of dog bites during the process. To mitigate this, all participating members have received preventative anti-rabies vaccinations prior to their involvement. This proactive measure aims to ensure their safety while performing their vital tasks.

Volunteer Efforts and Experience

A volunteer from Jaipur, Vishal, reported that his team has extensive experience in similar vaccination efforts across India, having been active in this field for the last two years. He mentioned, “Today is our first day in Shimla, and we are focused on catching dogs and administering anti-rabies vaccines. Although there is always the risk of being bitten, our aim is to vaccinate approximately 5,000 dogs within the ten-day window.” This commitment underscores the dedication these volunteers have towards the mission.

Subratto, General Secretary of the Human People organisation, highlighted their objective of vaccinating more than 4,000 dogs throughout the campaign. He stated, “Last year, we managed to vaccinate around 3,700 dogs. Our past initiatives have included door-to-door vaccination drives in various areas, such as Kotkhai and Jubbal, and we have also coordinated sterilisation efforts.” This organisation aims to provide assistance not only for vaccination but also for broader welfare and control measures for stray animals.

Support for the campaign also comes from veterinary students and professionals who are involved in raising awareness regarding rabies prevention methods. Aratrika Agrawal, Vice President of IVSA India, noted the importance of achieving herd immunity through mass vaccination, thereby breaking the rabies transmission cycle.

Municipal Corporation’s Long-Term Strategy

According to Shimla Municipal Corporation Mayor Surinder Chauhan, the local civic body has solicited the help of non-governmental organisations and volunteers to bolster their dog population management and vaccination initiatives. He mentioned that the anti-rabies vaccinations not only assist in public health but also contribute to the counting of the stray dog population in the city.

Past campaigns have reportedly covered around 3,000 dogs, and the current programme aims to enhance data on the local dog population. Following the vaccination phase, the Municipal Corporation is gearing up to implement a larger sterilisation initiative, expected to start after October 15. Mayor Chauhan indicated that this approach is vital for ongoing management of the stray dog population.

In addition to vaccination and sterilisation, the Municipal Corporation is striving to establish shelters for stray dogs and has allocated substantial funding for operational logistics, highlighting a comprehensive approach to animal population management. The involvement of the Animal Husbandry Department also exemplifies the collaborative efforts being made to address these public health concerns effectively.
