Senior Finance Ministry Official Killed in BMW Crash; Family Alleges Delay in Medical Aid Was Deliberate

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic road accident involving a speeding BMW has claimed the life of a senior Finance Ministry official, with disturbing allegations now surfacing about deliberate medical negligence and a potential attempt to shield the accused.

Navjot Singh, serving as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, was riding his motorcycle with his wife, Sandeep Kaur, when the accident occurred near Metro Pillar No. 67 on Ring Road, close to Dhaula Kuan. The incident happened around 1:30 pm on Sunday as they were returning from Gurdwara Bangla Sahib.

Eyewitnesses reported that a blue BMW, allegedly driven recklessly by a woman later identified as Gaganpreet Kaur, struck the couple’s motorcycle from behind. The impact flung both riders onto the road. While Sandeep Kaur, who was wearing a helmet, suffered multiple fractures and head injuries, Singh — who had tied his turban — sustained severe trauma to his head, face, and legs.

Instead of rushing the injured couple to the nearest trauma centre, the accused and her husband transported them nearly 20 km away to Neulife Hospital in GTB Nagar — a facility reportedly known to them. This decision has come under heavy scrutiny from the victim’s family.

“I kept requesting her repeatedly to take us to a nearby hospital so that we could get quick treatment, but she did not listen,” Kaur stated in her official complaint. She further told police that after regaining consciousness during the journey, she found herself in the passenger seat of a van, with her husband unconscious in the back.

Navjot Singh Decalred Dead at Hospital

Navjot Singh was declared dead on arrival at the GTB Nagar hospital. His wife, still recovering from her injuries, was later shifted to Venkateshwar Hospital by relatives and friends. Medical professionals reportedly cited a road accident as the cause of death. The FIR also notes that the BMW driver and her husband got themselves admitted to the same hospital.

The couple, identified as residents of Gurugram, reportedly runs a business related to leather products, including horse saddles and seat covers. Both sustained injuries and are still under medical supervision, according to Delhi Police.

The late official’s son, Navnoor Singh, voiced sharp criticism of the accused’s conduct, asserting that a deliberate attempt was made to avoid public or legal exposure. “There was definitely something wrong, they were taken to a hospital 20 km away, which had no facilities. My father was declared dead at the hospital, but people there said that death instantly after an accident is very rare,” he said.

He also raised concerns over the hospital’s cooperation, stating, “Hours later, I saw a doctor preparing a medico-legal certificate in her name. They denied she was there, but I found out she was being treated on another floor. The hospital staff was completely uncooperative.”

The FIR filed in connection with the case falls under Sections 281, 125B, 105, and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Among these, Section 238 deals specifically with concealment or destruction of evidence, suggesting investigators are looking into whether an effort was made to mislead authorities.

Forensic Team Examines BMW Crash Site

Crime scene experts and a forensic team from the FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory) examined the accident site, where the BMW was found overturned. Police also seized both the motorcycle and the luxury vehicle. A senior official confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated and that further action will follow once the medical statements of the accused are recorded.

Police mentioned that in the aftermath of the accident, the motorcycle may have also struck a bus on its left side, though the primary impact was from the rear. The driver allegedly lost control before crashing into the divider, leading to the overturn.

Sandeep Kaur’s statement also reflects the family’s belief that the choice of hospital was not only inappropriate but fatal. “I repeatedly requested the lady (accused) to take my husband to the nearest hospital, my husband needs immediate first aid. But she deliberately did not take my husband to the nearest hospital and instead took him to a faraway hospital known to them. My husband had to wait too long on a stretcher there,” she said.

Singh’s sister echoed this sentiment, demanding accountability. “That lady should not be spared. She killed my brother. They took him to a hospital with only one room, while there were so many hospitals near Dhaula Kuan. If he had been taken there, he could have been saved,” she said.

Three separate PCR calls were received by Delhi Police around the time of the accident, reporting a severe traffic jam near Delhi Cantt metro station. On arrival, they discovered the overturned BMW and the damaged motorcycle. The injured had already been moved, and shortly thereafter, police received confirmation from the hospital about Singh’s death and Kaur’s injuries.

As investigations continue, with both the accused and the surviving victim undergoing medical treatment, the Singh family continues to demand justice for what they allege was a preventable tragedy compounded by deliberate decisions and lack of timely care.
