Saudi Arabia Promises Serious Response Following Houthi Attacks on Airports

The CSR Journal Magazine

Saudi Arabia has declared its intention to deliver a significant response after a series of attacks by Houthi rebels from Yemen resulted in the deaths of at least 18 individuals. These assaults have raised alarms regarding the security of the kingdom’s essential infrastructure. Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the country’s Energy Minister, emphasized the gravity of the situation during an energy conference held in Riyadh on Monday, stating, “The events of recent weeks are serious, our response must be equally serious.”

The most severe attack occurred on Saturday at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, where 13 fatalities were recorded, alongside hundreds of injuries. Previous assaults on the preceding Wednesday and Thursday led to the deaths of four individuals, with another person killed in an attack on Sunday.

Impact on Air Travel and Infrastructure

In light of these events, Saudi authorities announced an extension of operations suspension at Riyadh’s airport on Monday. The ramifications of the attacks have extended to air travel, prompting Etihad Airways to cancel all flights to and from Riyadh until the following week. Similarly, Bahrain’s Gulf Air has suspended its Riyadh flights until Saturday, as confirmed by reports from AFP.

Additionally, Dammam International Airport, located in eastern Saudi Arabia, was allegedly targeted on Sunday evening. Earlier that day, the Saudi-led military coalition reported successfully intercepting and destroying a ballistic missile aimed at Khamis Mushait, a city that hosts a significant military base. These developments indicate a sharpening focus on protecting vital infrastructure and maintaining operational capabilities.

In comments reflecting upon the situation, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman noted, “For Saudi Arabia, these circumstances have tested our infrastructure, our institutions, our people, and our resilience,” underscoring the critical need for ongoing protection of energy security amidst such threats.

Houthi Threats and Regional Tensions

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for the recent attacks and threatened additional strikes on Saudi transit hubs, labelling these locations as “a theatre of operations for our forces.” Moreover, a senior Houthi official issued a stern warning to the United States, asserting that Washington would experience a “swift and painful response” should it involve itself in the conflict in Yemen.

This escalation of hostilities occurs against the backdrop of a broader US-Iran conflict, which has already contributed to tumultuous energy markets and increased instability throughout West Asia. Iran, a key supporter of the Houthi movement, expressed serious concern over the latest incidents on Monday, reflecting the heightened tensions in the region.

Since 2015, Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition aimed at bolstering Yemen’s internationally recognised government against the Houthis. The ongoing conflict has had vast implications for regional stability, as various external actors continue to play pivotal roles in shaping the trajectory of the situation.
