NDA Ally Suspends Rebel MLA Ram Pukar Sinha in Bihar

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) has made the decision to suspend its state general secretary and chief spokesperson, Ram Pukar Sinha, for a duration of six years. This action follows his decision to contest the Bihar Legislative Council election from the Saran Teachers’ constituency as an independent candidate, opposing the official nominee from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This suspension was enacted on October 12 and highlights internal fractures within the party.

According to a statement issued by Prashant Pankaj, RLM’s working state president and headquarters in-charge, Sinha was penalised for violating the party’s discipline by running against the NDA’s designated candidate. The party contended that his actions had adversely affected its reputation. Despite the NDA’s nomination of Janata Dal (United) leader Anand Pushkar for the Saran Teachers’ constituency, Sinha chose to pursue his own candidacy.

Support from Other MLAs

The controversy surrounding Sinha’s nomination has gained additional complexity as three of RLM’s four MLAs were reportedly present during his nomination. These legislators include Alok Kumar Singh, the MLA from Dinara and the Bihar state president of RLM; Madhav Anand from Madhubani; and Rameshwar Mahto from Bajpatti. Their attendance has been interpreted as a display of solidarity with Sinha, casting a spotlight on the discord between RLM’s leadership and some of its members.

Singh defended their support for Sinha by emphasising the importance of recognising long-standing party workers and preserving morale within the organisation. Conversely, Upendra Kushwaha, the party president, is committed to maintaining alignment with the NDA and endorsing its candidate. The trio’s absence from an NDA meeting on October 9, which centred on strategies for the upcoming Legislative Council elections, further raised concerns regarding the cohesion of the party.

Future Actions and Implications

Following the suspension of Sinha, attention now turns towards the fate of the three supportive MLAs. The RLM has not yet announced any actions against them, and this has led to speculation about whether Kushwaha will demand explanations or initiate disciplinary measures concerning their backing of a candidate opposed to the NDA nominee.

This situation holds particular significance for the RLM, which currently has four MLAs, including the trio who showed support for Sinha. While the party has acted against Sinha for defying its stance, how it chooses to handle the MLAs could signal its approach to managing dissent within its ranks. The electoral contest for the Saran Teachers’ constituency now includes NDA nominee Anand Pushkar, independent candidate Ram Pukar Sinha, and Jan Suraj candidate Afaq Ahmed.

In summary, the unfolding dispute within the RLM has not only implications for the party’s internal dynamics but also for the electoral landscape in Bihar’s Legislative Council elections. As the situation develops, the next steps taken by RLM leadership concerning the rebellious MLAs remain uncertain.
