During a recent session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar urged the global community to bring an end to ongoing wars, particularly emphasising the tumultuous situations in the Gulf region and Ukraine. He stated that “endless war must give way now to an end to war,” highlighting the urgency for global leaders to focus on conflict resolution.

In his address on September 23, 2026, Jaishankar conveyed India’s deep-seated concerns regarding the persistent hostilities affecting millions. He reinforced the need for restraint among conflicting parties and called for comprehensive measures to protect civilians. “The uninterrupted flow of energy and commerce” remains vital, he noted, as ongoing tensions severely impact global markets.

Jaishankar specifically pointed out the current conflict in the Gulf, describing it as exacerbating an already fragile situation. He condemned the targeting of commercial shipping, affirming that such actions disrupt international trade routes and are “simply unacceptable.” Jaishankar urged all involved to prioritise dialogue and de-escalation to foster a more stable environment.

Concerns Over the Ukrainian Conflict

Turning his attention to Ukraine, Jaishankar remarked on the prolonged nature of the conflict, nearing its fifth year, and the serious implications it holds for the international community. He referenced remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, reinforcing the idea that an end to the fighting is critical.

The minister emphasised India’s commitment to supporting peace initiatives, while also highlighting the urgent need to secure the safety of seafarers. He expressed readiness on behalf of India to assist in safeguarding food grain supplies and energy resources. Jaishankar reiterated India’s role as a stabilising force in the face of such precarious situations.

Jaishankar’s comments also echoed global calls for peace, advocating a collaborative approach to tackle the humanitarian crises that have unfolded as a consequence of ongoing wars. He affirmed that ensuring food and energy security should remain a priority for all nations involved.

Regional Stability in West Asia

Jaishankar expanded his concerns to the ongoing violence in West Asia, stating that tensions continue to plague the region. He referred to the Israel-Palestine conflict, asserting that a viable two-state solution is essential for establishing lasting peace. Jaishankar expressed India’s unwavering belief in the necessity of dialogue and negotiation to resolve deeply rooted issues.

He also highlighted India’s contributions to humanitarian assistance in the region, reassuring that efforts are underway to provide relief to the Palestinian people. “In the meantime, India is contributing to humanitarian assistance and relief efforts for the Palestinian people,” he said, illustrating India’s commitment to enhancing regional stability.

Jaishankar concluded his address by reiterating India’s concerns regarding the various ongoing conflicts, calling again for restraint, protection of civilians, and safe passage for shipping. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to contributing positively towards peace and stability in the context of global conflicts.
