Government Lowers NEET-MDS 2026 Dental PG Cut-Off

The CSR Journal Magazine

The government has lowered the qualifying cut-off for postgraduate dental admissions for the second consecutive year, addressing the issue of unfilled seats in the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programme. The qualifying percentile for NEET-MDS 2026 has been decreased by 20.576 points across all categories, following a prior reduction of 19.863 points in 2025. This adjustment reflects ongoing concerns regarding the availability of seats in dental colleges nationwide.

A senior official from the Union health ministry has estimated that approximately 1,200 MDS seats remain unoccupied across the country. However, specific state-wise vacancy figures are not currently available. The official noted that this estimate is derived from the distribution of seats between the All India quota, which comprises 50 per cent of the total, and state counselling, which accounts for the remaining half.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has reported a total of 460 confirmed vacancies and 762 virtual vacancies for the second round of MDS counselling this year. These vacancies are distributed among government and private institutions, which collectively offer 7,716 seats across 287 colleges. Among these, 46 government colleges provide 1,103 seats, while 241 private colleges account for 6,613 seats.

Details of Cut-Off Scores for Various Categories

The revised qualifying scores for the NEET-MDS 2026 have seen significant reductions across various categories. For the General and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), the qualifying score has been lowered from 308 to 234 out of a total of 960. Similarly, the score for General-Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) has decreased from 289 to 218, while the score for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) has fallen from 271 to 200.

In comparison, the cut-off scores for the previous year, 2025, were also reduced significantly. The scores for General/EWS were adjusted from 261 to 197, for General-PwBD from 244 to 182, and for SC/ST/OBC from 227 to 168. This trend indicates a continued effort to fill vacant seats in dental postgraduate programmes.

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) issued a notice regarding the cut-off revision, stating that it followed a letter from the health ministry dated October 12. The notice clarified that the adjustments were made in accordance with the relevant MDS regulations. However, it did not explicitly mention that the decision was influenced by the number of vacant seats.

Impact of Cut-Off Changes on Candidates

The results for NEET-MDS 2026 were announced on June 2, and the NBEMS has confirmed that the revision of cut-off scores will not affect the ranks of the candidates who have already been assessed. This assurance aims to provide clarity to candidates regarding the implications of the new cut-off scores on their admission prospects.

As the counselling process progresses, candidates must remain vigilant about the status of their applications and the availability of seats. The distinction between confirmed and virtual vacancies plays a crucial role in determining the final allotment of seats. Virtual vacancies refer to those seats that are currently allocated to candidates who may choose to upgrade to a different seat, potentially freeing up their original seats for others.

In summary, the government’s decision to lower the cut-off scores for dental postgraduate admissions reflects an ongoing effort to address the issue of vacant seats. As the situation evolves, stakeholders in the dental education sector will be closely monitoring the outcomes of this year’s counselling process.
