Rohit Sharma: First Indian to Smash 1000 ODI runs in Australia

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma added yet another golden chapter to his already glittering career by becoming the first Indian batter to score 1000 One Day International (ODI) runs against Australia on their home soil. The record was achieved during the second ODI at Adelaide Oval, as he continued to showcase his class and temperament against one of the toughest bowling attacks in world cricket.

Rohit reached the milestone with a fluent 73-run knock off 97 balls, guiding India to a solid start. His innings was marked by patience, precision, and occasional bursts of power – particularly the two giant pull shots against Australian pacer Mitchell Owen that cleared the boundary comfortably. This latest effort reaffirmed his reputation as a modern-day giant of the game, especially in Australian conditions where subcontinental players often struggle.

Dominance Down Under

Rohit’s journey to this landmark has been nothing short of exceptional. In 21 ODIs played in Australia against the hosts, he has accumulated 1071 runs at an impressive average of 56.36 and a strike rate of 89.32. His record includes four centuries and three fifties, with his highest score being an unbeaten 171 — an innings still remembered for its elegance and authority.

The nearest Indian challenger to this milestone, Virat Kohli, currently trails with 802 runs. While Kohli has been a consistent performer Down Under, Rohit’s ability to convert starts into big scores has given him the edge. His natural timing, especially on Australia’s bouncy pitches, and his composure under pressure have set him apart from the rest.

Beyond statistics, what stands out is Rohit’s tactical understanding of conditions. Whether it is playing the new ball cautiously in Sydney or taking on the spinners in Melbourne, he has evolved his game like a true craftsman. Each of his hundreds in Australia has come in crucial situations, often setting up or rescuing India’s innings against world-class opposition.

Passing Legends and Setting New Benchmarks

With his latest innings, Rohit also surpassed former captain Sourav Ganguly to become India’s third-highest run-getter in ODIs. He now has 11,249 runs in 275 matches at an average of 48.69, with 32 centuries and 59 half-centuries to his name. Ganguly, who was among India’s most successful ODI batters, had finished his career with 11,121 runs in 308 matches. Rohit’s achievement adds another feather to his cap as he slowly inches closer to the elite territory of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.

His 73 at Adelaide was also notable for its controlled aggression. Despite the slower strike rate of 75.26, Rohit demonstrated remarkable patience. It was only the second time since 2022 that he reached a fifty-plus score with a strike rate below 100, the last being his 66-ball 50 against England during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. The innings showed his adaptability — a quality that continues to define his leadership and batting alike.

Continuing the Form in 2025

Rohit’s consistency with the bat remains strong this year too. In 10 ODI innings, he has scored 383 runs at an average of 38.30, including a century and two fifties, with a top score of 119. For Indian fans, his continued success is a source of pride and inspiration, particularly as he leads a younger generation of cricketers into a new era of Indian cricket.

As Rohit walked off the ground in Adelaide to a standing ovation from fans, it was more than just a personal feat. It was a moment of Indian cricketing pride on Australian soil — a place where very few have managed to dominate consistently. With many more matches to come, the “Hitman” seems far from done, and his hunger for runs continues to inspire millions back home.
