Retired Officials Seek Apology from Rahul Gandhi Following Parliament Protest Over Misconduct

The CSR Journal Magazine

More than 200 retired officers from the armed forces, along with former civil servants, diplomats, and legal professionals, have publicly called on Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, to apologize for his conduct during a recent protest. The group accused Gandhi of breaching the decorum expected of members in the Parliament.

The individuals expressed their discontent in an open letter that garnered 204 signatures. They highlighted an incident where Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by several Members of Parliament, was observed sitting on the steps of the Parliament building while consuming tea and biscuits. According to the signatories, this behavior was inappropriate for those who occupy seats in the nation’s highest legislative assembly.

The letter stated that the steps of Parliament should not be treated as a stage for political displays or theatrical performances, insisting that Gandhi’s actions reflected a conscious disregard for parliamentary decorum. They argued that such conduct represents a challenge to the authority of the legislative chair, explicitly undermining the integrity of the institution.

In their letter, the retired officials referenced instructions issued by Speaker Om Birla, which specifically prohibited protests or demonstrations within the Parliament complex. The signatories contended that the opposition, under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, overlooked this directive, violating the established norms of parliamentary behavior.

Beyond merely calling for an apology, the signatories emphasized the need for Gandhi to reflect on the attitudes that led to such actions. They urged that preserving the solemnity, authority, and institutional sanctity of Parliament should be of paramount importance for all members.
