Rajasthan’s Anuj Agnihotri Achieves Top Rank in UPSC Civil Services Examination 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

The results of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination were announced on March 6, 2026, revealing Anuj Agnihotri as the top candidate. Hailing from Rajasthan, Agnihotri secured the All India Rank 1 after transitioning from a medical career to a focus on public administration. In recorded mock interviews with Ensure IAS, he demonstrated a strong grasp of policy issues, governance challenges, and ethical considerations, confidently engaging with various topics despite occasionally uncertain answers.

A Journey from Rawatbhata to National Recognition

Anuj Agnihotri was raised in Rawatbhata, a town recognized for its nuclear power facilities. During his mock interview, he described his hometown as “a small town in Rajasthan,” where he completed a significant portion of his early education. He later relocated to Jodhpur to pursue a medical degree at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, graduating in 2023. Rather than continuing in clinical medicine, Agnihotri opted for the civil services path, subsequently joining the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Civil Service, where he was undergoing probation training at the time of the mock interview.

Rigorous Mock Interview Preparation

The mock interview examined a range of topics, including civic behavior, public administration, and significant issues like nuclear energy and freedom of speech. In one instance, he compared life in Rawatbhata with visits to relatives in the Jalaun district, emphasizing differences in civic discipline and urban layout. Agnihotri acknowledged that many smaller towns face challenges related to sanitation and civic sense, which are critical areas for administrative intervention. He recognized the difficulty in effecting behavioral change in society, stressing that the first step is raising awareness among citizens about the importance of civic responsibility.

Transparency and Intellectual Humility

A notable aspect of Agnihotri’s mock interview was his readiness to admit gaps in his knowledge. When posed with questions about specific service rules or medical research topics he was unfamiliar with, he openly stated, “I will read into it, sir.” Such honesty is often viewed positively in civil service interviews, wherein panels value clarity of thought and a receptive attitude over mere factual recall.

Dedication to Public Service and Policy Engagement

Agnihotri expressed a strong interest in field administration and public interaction roles. He explained that he preferred the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Civil Service for its opportunities for citizen engagement. “I have always inclined to work in a public-facing setup,” he stated, highlighting that the service allows officers to confront governance challenges directly. The interview touched on environmental policy, with Agnihotri advocating for the protection of the Aravalli Range, recognizing its crucial role in mitigating desertification and pollution impacts.

Balanced Perspectives on Social Issues

When addressing social issues, Agnihotri maintained a measured approach. In discussing whether HIV testing should be mandatory before marriage, he recommended against compulsion, advocating instead for awareness campaigns and voluntary testing, while underscoring the importance of personal privacy. On the topic of nuclear energy, relevant to his hometown, he noted its expected role in India’s energy future due to its reliability and low emissions.

A Remarkable Journey Acknowledged by the Panel

As the mock interview concluded, the panel reflected on the significance of Agnihotri’s journey from a small town to a prominent national position. One interviewer described his progression as “a remarkable journey.” With his All India Rank 1 in the UPSC 2026 examination, Agnihotri is set to embark on training for one of the most prestigious administrative roles in the country, transitioning years of dedicated preparation into a career in public service.
