Punjab Kings Win Toss, Opt to Field Against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026 Opener

The CSR Journal Magazine

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to field first in their Indian Premier League (IPL) opener against Gujarat Titans (GT) at New Chandigarh, Punjab, on March 31. As last year’s runners-up, PBKS aims to clinch their first IPL title this season, under the guidance of Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting. Their campaign commences with high expectations.

Significance of the Match for Gujarat Titans

For the Gujarat Titans and their captain, Shubman Gill, this season is crucial as they seek to secure a second title following a playoff finish last year. Gill, who captains India’s ODI and Test teams, aims to demonstrate his capability in the T20 format, particularly after being overlooked for the T20 World Cup due to a dip in form after being appointed vice-captain.

Comments from the Captains During the Toss

In remarks made during the toss, PBKS skipper Iyer emphasized the importance of focusing on the present. He stated, “We are going to bowl first. We had a phenomenal last season. We have to stay in the present. We need to play our best brand of cricket.” He also mentioned that Cooper Connolly is included in the team, along with other overseas players Marcus Stoinis, Xavier Bartlett, and Marco Jansen.

GT skipper Gill highlighted the debut of two players, New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips and Rajasthan’s Ashok Sharma, and provided insights into his team’s overseas lineup. “The wicket looks pretty good. Rain on and off over the last two days. Looks like a good wicket to bat on,” he noted. Gill expressed confidence in his team, including experienced players such as Jos Buttler, who he believes will have an excellent season despite a challenging T20 World Cup performance.

Playing XI for Both Teams

The playing XI for Punjab Kings consists of Prabhsimran Singh (wicketkeeper), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, and Yuzvendra Chahal. In contrast, the Gujarat Titans lineup features Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (captain), Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Glenn Phillips, M Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Ashok Sharma, and Mohammed Siraj.
