Pune Techie Duped of Rs 42.64 Lakh by Man Posing as ISRO Scientist on Matrimonial Site

The CSR Journal Magazine

A search for a life partner resulted in significant financial loss for a 28-year-old software engineer from Maharashtra, who became a victim of deception amounting to ₹42.64 lakh. The incident unfolded after the woman connected with a man on a matrimonial website who allegedly misrepresented himself as a scientist affiliated with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Pursuant to this interaction, the Wakad police in Pune lodged a cheating complaint against a 36-year-old man residing in Alibag.

Initial Contact and Trust Building

According to Inspector Kishor Patil from the Wakad police station, the victim, employed at a prominent IT firm, created her profile on the matrimonial site in hopes of finding a compatible partner. In November 2024, she received a message from an individual named Jayesh Patil, who claimed to work at ISRO. His assurances of a bright future together led to a marriage proposal, bolstering her trust in his intentions. He later visited her in Wakad, further deepening their emotional connection.

Financial Deception Unfolds

As their relationship progressed, the man began soliciting funds under various pretenses, claiming the money was necessary for acquiring land and property for their future. Over the course of approximately three months, from November 2024 to January 2025, the woman transferred a total of ₹42.64 lakh, believing she was investing in a life they were slated to share.

Discovery of the Truth

The situation took a drastic turn when the woman learned that Jayesh Patil was not connected to ISRO, and the credentials he presented were entirely fabricated. This revelation prompted her to file an online complaint, leading the Wakad police to initiate an investigation. The police team, under Inspector Patil’s leadership, succeeded in freezing and recovering ₹16.65 lakh of the defrauded amount, while efforts continue to locate the remaining ₹27 lakh.
