The CSR Journal Magazine

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, recently convened a meeting to assess the preparations for initiating commercial civil flight operations from Thoise Airport in Nubra Valley and Kargil Airport. This session took place in New Delhi on Saturday, August 22. It was attended by senior officials from a range of government departments, including the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Air Force, and the Airports Authority of India.

The focus of the meeting was to address critical infrastructure, regulatory, and operational challenges that must be overcome to facilitate the early launch of civilian flights from these strategically significant airports. The discussions highlighted the urgent need to ensure that all necessary arrangements are completed in a timely manner.

During the meeting, LG Saxena emphasised that the operationalisation of flights from Thoise and Kargil airports would significantly enhance regional connectivity. He noted that this initiative would not only foster tourism but also boost economic activities in the bordering areas of Ladakh.

Infrastructure Developments for Thoise and Kargil Airports

Significant infrastructural advancements are underway to support the commencement of commercial flights. The Indian Air Force has reportedly allocated five acres of land for the construction of a new civil terminal at Thoise Airport in Nubra Valley. Furthermore, runway recarpeting work is currently in progress and is anticipated to be completed by November this year.

The target for commencing civil flight operations from Thoise is set for December 2026. This will occur from the existing chartered flight terminal after necessary refurbishment works are carried out. This development aims to ensure that the airport can accommodate regular commercial flights safely and efficiently.

In addition to Thoise, Kargil Airport is also being prepared for civilian services. A joint inspection involving the Indian Air Force, the Airports Authority of India, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation is scheduled for September 1. This assessment will take place in the presence of LG Saxena, who will oversee the evaluation of the airport’s readiness.

Enhancing Accessibility and Economic Opportunities

The introduction of commercial flight services is expected to significantly improve accessibility for residents of both Nubra and Kargil. This development is particularly important for those wishing to travel to various tourist sites, including areas such as Turtuk, Siachen Base Camp, and Drass.

LG Saxena has directed all relevant agencies to ensure effective coordination in completing the necessary infrastructure, regulatory, and operational formalities as soon as possible. The timely completion of these works will be crucial in realising the potential benefits of enhanced travel connectivity in the region.

The meeting also included participation from prominent officials, such as the Chief Secretary of UT Ladakh, the Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Defence, and Air Marshal George Thomas, the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force. Their involvement underscores the collaborative effort needed to achieve the successful operationalisation of commercial flights.
