Pune Municipal Corporation And Anandvan Foundation Initiate Tree Plantation Drive

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Anandvan Foundation have launched a collaborative tree plantation and transplantation initiative in Pune. This project aims to plant 6,500 new trees and transplant 500 existing trees across a designated area of 7 hectares at Survey No. 18, Yewalewadi. The foundation has granted permission to PMC to supervise these efforts, marking a significant step towards enhancing the city’s green cover.

Once the plantation and transplantation have been completed, the maintenance and conservation responsibilities of the new and relocated trees will fall under the purview of Pune Municipal Corporation. A formal consent letter regarding this agreement has also been dispatched to the Deputy Conservator of Forests in Pune, signifying the project’s alignment with local environmental regulations.

This tree initiative is also closely tied to the upcoming G. A. Kulkarni Path to Karve Putla Development Plan (DP) Road project in Kothrud, facilitating critical environmental mitigation measures. By clearing the way for further progress on this vital infrastructure project, the initiative aims to support local environmental efforts while addressing urban development challenges.

Environmental and Infrastructure Goals Aligned

The proposed new road seeks to improve internal connectivity within Kothrud and alleviate traffic congestion on busy existing routes. This project is particularly pertinent as urban development has led to increased population density and traffic levels in Kothrud. The new road will create an additional internal route, which is expected to distribute local traffic more efficiently and enhance overall mobility in the area.

Rajesh Bankar, an officer from the Road Department of Pune Municipal Corporation, articulated the project’s objectives, stating that the road link aims to strengthen internal connectivity and reduce traffic pressure at critical junctions. He emphasised that with the redevelopment of the area, there is a pressing need for infrastructure development that is mindful of environmental concerns.

Bankar expressed gratitude to the Anandvan Foundation for facilitating the necessary space for this extensive plantation scheme. He highlighted the importance of not only planting but also maintaining these trees responsibly to ensure long-term sustainability of the green cover in Pune.

Long-Term Sustainability and Urban Growth

Bhupesh Sharma, the Founder Secretary of Anandvan Foundation, shared his enthusiasm for the initiative, noting the positive impact on Pune’s green landscape. Sharma remarked that the project aligns with their aim to enhance the city’s ecological footprint and pledged support for its sustainable management.

The Kothrud locality has undergone substantial redevelopment over recent years, leading to significant increases in population and traffic. Much of its internal road network was designed during a time of much lower traffic volumes, necessitating the need for the proposed new road link to accommodate current demands effectively.

This new infrastructure will also complement Pune’s expanding public transportation system, including the planned extension of the Pune Metro from Nal Stop to Warje and Manikbagh, ultimately contributing to a more integrated and efficient transport network in the city. The successful execution of this project and the tree plantation initiative is anticipated to yield environmental benefits while supporting urban development goals.
