Prince Harry and Meghan Prepare to Move Back to the UK After Six Years in the US

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to return to Britain with their two children, following a six-year period in the United States. Reports indicate that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be leaving their residence in California for an extended stay in the UK, where their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are scheduled to commence school in September. Sources close to the couple have corroborated this move, though representatives for both Harry and Buckingham Palace have not provided official statements on the matter.

No Plans to Resume Royal Duties

Despite their relocation, the couple is not anticipated to resume their official royal responsibilities. According to media sources, Harry and Meghan will not occupy a royal residence during their time in the UK, maintaining their status as non-working royals, a situation initially agreed upon with the late Queen Elizabeth II when they withdrew from royal roles in 2020. This status has been continually embraced since their departure from royal duties.

Harry and Meghan tied the knot at Windsor Castle in May 2018, a union that was initially perceived as a fresh phase for the monarchy, particularly due to Meghan’s previous career as an actress and her diverse heritage. However, quickly escalating tensions between the couple and other royals cast a shadow over their marriage.

In January 2020, the couple announced their intent to step back from senior royal roles and subsequently relocated to Montecito, California. Reports suggested that their property was purchased for approximately $14.7 million, marking a significant lifestyle shift. Their departure prompted numerous revelations about familial relations, particularly during a televised interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, where Meghan discussed personal challenges within the royal family, including allegations involving comments about their future child’s skin colour.

Challenges in Family Relationships

The relationship between Harry and his brother, Prince William, has notably deteriorated over the years. In his memoir, “Spare,” Harry recounted a particular confrontation in 2019, detailing how a disagreement with William resulted in a physical altercation. The book further explored Harry’s feelings regarding his brother’s treatment of Meghan. Tensions have also existed in Harry’s connection with King Charles, though recent months have shown some signs of improvement, with the two reuniting in Britain after a prolonged absence of meaningful communication.

Harry has voiced ongoing concerns regarding his security while in the UK after losing automatic police protection when he stepped back from royal duties. He challenged this change legally, claiming it left him and his family vulnerable. In May 2025, Harry’s appeal regarding his security arrangements was denied, adding to the complexities in his familial dynamics. He has since expressed a desire to reconcile with his family and highlighted worries about his father’s health as contributing factors to his longing for communication.

The couple’s recent visit to the UK granted King Charles the opportunity to spend time with Archie and Lilibet for the first time since 2022, marking a momentous family occasion. As the Sussexes prepare to settle in Britain, this move signals a notable shift in their family life after years spent in California, although it does not indicate a resumption of their previous royal roles. Their forthcoming return is poised to coincide with their children’s schooling, while Harry and Meghan continue to remain aligned with their non-working royal status.
