President Murmu and PM Modi Honour Mahatma Gandhi and Former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 157th birth anniversary on October 2, 2026. The President highlighted the importance of Gandhi’s message of peace and non-violence, particularly in light of current global conflicts. In her address, she stated that Gandhi’s life and ideals are respected worldwide and are particularly relevant amid today’s turmoil.

During a gathering at Rajghat, the samadhi of Gandhi, President Murmu participated in the Sarva-Dharma Prarthana, which commemorates the Father of the Nation. She noted that in a world affected by war and strife, Gandhi’s teachings remain a crucial reminder of the path to lasting peace and co-operation between nations.

President Murmu reaffirmed India’s commitment to becoming a developed nation by 2047, underscoring that this vision aligns with Gandhi’s principle of ‘Sarvodaya’, aiming for the welfare and upliftment of all. She encouraged citizens to contribute to building an empowered and self-reliant India through ethical actions and active engagement.

Prime Minister Modi’s Reflections on Gandhi’s Legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi, expressing that his life serves as a beacon of truth, non-violence, and compassion. In a message shared on social media platform X, he stated that Gandhi’s timeless teachings will guide humanity through all eras. Modi further included excerpts from the Bhagavad Gita, reinforcing the connection between Gandhian philosophy and broader spiritual teachings.

On the same platform, Modi emphasised the importance of Gandhi’s influence on a global scale, reflecting on how his thoughts resonate with millions. He encouraged people to adopt Gandhi’s principles by supporting local industries, specifically urging them to purchase at least one Khadi product on Gandhi Jayanti.

The Prime Minister articulated that despite Gandhi’s distance from political power, his ideals continue to resonate deeply in the hearts of the populace. He asserted that as long as the essence of Gandhi’s thoughts prevails, they will remain applicable to societal progress.

Honouring Former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri

In addition to commemorating Gandhi, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, recognising his enduring influence characterised by simplicity and commitment to national service. He invoked Shastri’s mantra ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,’ celebrating the inspiration Shastri provided to both the armed forces and the agricultural community.

Modi praised Shastri’s humble yet determined character, noting that his selfless service greatly contributed to the nation during his brief term as Prime Minister. This acknowledgment serves as a reminder of Shastri’s pivotal role in India’s history.

On the occasion, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan also paid respects at Vijay Ghat, further underscoring the day’s significance. Notable figures including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and other government officials paid floral tributes at Rajghat, honouring both Gandhi and Shastri.

Various events across India marked the anniversary, with activities ranging from students creating sand art in Odisha to community clean-up initiatives in Gurugram. These observances reflect the widespread respect for the ideals championed by Gandhi and Shastri, solidifying their place in India’s cultural and historical consciousness.
