PM Modi to Open New Delhi Metro Corridors, Initiate Three Additional Lines on March 8

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the continual expansion of the Delhi Metro network, highlighting its potential to improve connectivity in the national capital and promote clean public transport. On March 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate two new Metro corridors and lay the foundation stone for three more, signaling a major step towards enhancing public transport in the city while alleviating congestion and pollution from private vehicles.

Details of the Inauguration

Chief Minister Gupta shared that the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Majlis Park-Maujpur-Babarpur section of the Pink Line and the Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park section of the Magenta Line. With the opening of the Majlis Park-Maujpur-Babarpur stretch, the Pink Line will reach approximately 71.56 km, making it the first fully operational “Ring Metro” in the country. This new corridor is poised to significantly enhance connectivity between North-East and North-West Delhi, while also reducing travel times across various parts of the city.

Extension of the Magenta Line

The Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park corridor represents an extension of the Magenta Line, which will increase the line’s total length to around 49 km. This extension aims to better link multiple residential and commercial areas with the Metro network, thereby improving accessibility for the residents of these regions.

Foundation Stones for New Corridors

In addition to the inauguration, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for three new Metro corridors under Phase-V (A). These include the Ramakrishna Ashram Marg-Indraprastha Central Vista corridor, the Aerocity-Indira Gandhi Airport Terminal-1 corridor, and the Tughlakabad-Kalindi Kunj corridor. Gupta emphasized that these projects are expected to greatly enhance connectivity between administrative, residential, and commercial hubs within Delhi, facilitating quicker access to Indira Gandhi Airport.

Regional Benefits

Gupta noted that the new corridors will benefit not only residents of Delhi but also commuters from the National Capital Region (NCR). For instance, individuals traveling from Faridabad and Ballabhgarh can reach Tughlakabad via the Violet Line and then directly travel to Indira Gandhi Airport Terminal-1 using the Golden Line. Similarly, commuters from Noida will have the convenience of reaching Kalindi Kunj via the Magenta Line and then access the airport and South Delhi with ease through the Golden Line.

Investment in Public Transport

Highlighting the Delhi government’s commitment to enhancing public transport, Gupta disclosed that ₹9,110 crore has been set aside for the Transport Department in the fiscal budget for 2025-26, marking a nearly 60 percent increase from last year’s allocation of ₹5,702 crore. Of this total, ₹2,929 crore is designated to expedite Metro projects throughout the capital.

Alignment with National Goals

Gupta stated that the expansion of the Metro network aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for developing a modern, integrated, and environmentally sustainable transport system in Delhi. This initiative is positioned as a crucial contribution towards achieving a “Viksit Bharat,” aimed at transforming the city into a world-class urban center.
