PM Modi to Lay Foundation of ₹22,864 Crore Silchar–Shillong–Guwahati Corridor

The CSR Journal Magazine

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the state in March to inaugurate the foundation stone for the Silchar-Shillong-Guwahati high-speed corridor. This ambitious project, costing approximately Rs 22,864 crore, aims to significantly decrease the travel time between Silchar and Guwahati to just 4.5 to 5 hours, thereby enhancing regional connectivity. In a press briefing, Sarma highlighted the importance of this project, describing it as a transformative initiative for Assam.

Government Investments in Infrastructure

During the announcement, Sarma noted that the state has received approvals for several infrastructure projects. He mentioned that the Union government and the Assam state government will jointly invest Rs 5,729 crore on the Kurua-Narengi bridge as part of the Guwahati Ring Road initiative, with land acquisition costs estimated around Rs 7,000 crore.

Furthermore, Sarma indicated that the Union government’s investment under the Kaziranga elevated corridor project would amount to Rs 6,957 crore.

Details on the Silchar-Guwahati Project

Sarma reiterated that the foundation laying ceremony for the Silchar-Shillong-Guwahati corridor will be a crucial event, marking a significant investment in Assam’s infrastructure future. He emphasized that this is one of the largest projects initiated by the Union government in the state, designed to enhance connectivity and trade possibilities across the region.

Upcoming Infrastructure Projects

The Chief Minister also announced a range of major infrastructure developments, including the Brahmaputra tunnel and the Kamakhya ropeway. He disclosed that the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs recently approved the construction of a twin-tube underwater road and rail tunnel across the Brahmaputra River, connecting Numaligarh and Gohpur at a cost of Rs 18,662 crore.

Sarma previously detailed the commitments made during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, mentioning that the Union government assured the implementation of projects valued at Rs 80,000 crore, of which projects worth Rs 55,000 crore have already been sanctioned.

Details on Other Projects and Developments

Sarma also mentioned exciting future projects, including the Kamakhya ropeway, which aims to connect Kamakhya railway station to the Kamakhya temple. The tender process for this project is reportedly ongoing, and a selected party is expected to be announced within ten days. The foundation for the ropeway will likewise be laid during Modi’s upcoming visit.

Recent Inaugurations by PM Modi

On a separate note, Prime Minister Modi recently inaugurated the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, a bridge constructed over the Brahmaputra River at an estimated cost of Rs 3,030 crore. This new six-lane extradosed Prestressed Concrete bridge is the first of its type in Northeast India and facilitates connectivity between Guwahati and North Guwahati.

Due to the region’s seismic activity, the bridge features advanced base isolation technology and high-performance stay cables for enhanced durability. A Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) has also been installed to ensure real-time monitoring of the bridge’s condition.

Focus on Connectivity and Development in Northeast India

During his recent visit, PM Modi inaugurated various development projects worth over Rs 5,450 crore aimed at bolstering connectivity, enhancing digital infrastructure, fostering higher education, and improving urban mobility across the northeastern region. These initiatives are expected to significantly contribute to the economic development and infrastructure advancement in Assam and its neighboring states.
