Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently acknowledged the twelve-year anniversary of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, emphasising the substantial transformation observed across multiple sectors. In a post shared on X, he highlighted the increase in domestic manufacturing, investments, and exports, stating, “More made in India. More investment in India. More exports from India. A transformation visible across sectors! #12YearsOfMakeInIndia.”

The initiative, launched on September 25, 2014, aimed to enhance India’s manufacturing ecosystem and establish the nation as a prominent global centre for manufacturing, design, and innovation. Over the past twelve years, various sectors have experienced remarkable changes owing to this programme.

Government Officials Reflect on Progress

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal celebrated the milestone, noting that India has transitioned from primarily manufacturing for its domestic needs to becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse. He stated, “The real story of Make in India goes beyond these numbers. It is the confidence it has created among our startup founders, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, innovators, exporters, and, most importantly, our people that ‘India can make, India can innovate, and India can compete with the world’.”

Recent government statistics illustrate that the manufacturing sector has exhibited strong growth in recent years. This growth is attributed, in part, to production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes, which have reportedly driven increased investment, production, and exports. These initiatives have enabled a remarkable evolution within the manufacturing landscape in India.

As of March 31, 2026, the PLI schemes attracted approximately Rs 2.40 lakh crore in actual investment while generating about Rs 23.8 lakh crore in production and sales. Furthermore, the export figures stand at around Rs 15.2 lakh crore, creating over 14.6 lakh direct and indirect job opportunities.

Growth in the Electronics Sector

One area that has seen significant growth over the past twelve years is electronics manufacturing. The production in this sector escalated from about Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to an estimated Rs 13.11 lakh crore by 2025-26. Additionally, mobile phone production surged from around Rs 18,000 crore to Rs 6.27 lakh crore during the same period.

The government asserts that the Make in India initiative has played a pivotal role in bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities. The initiative has not only facilitated increased investment but also encouraged innovation and the integration of Indian industries into global supply chains, enhancing their competitiveness.

As India marks this significant anniversary, officials and industry leaders remain optimistic about the future of manufacturing in the country. The successes realised through the Make in India initiative demonstrate the nation’s potential to rise as a key player in the global market.
