Passenger Train Connecting North Korea and China Arrives in Beijing After Six-Year Hiatus

A passenger train connecting North Korea and China has reached Beijing for the first time in six years, marking a significant development in cross-border travel. The train arrived at a railway station in Beijing at 8:40 am local time on March 13, after departing from Pyongyang. This service is expected to facilitate increased economic, trade, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

The resumption of train services follows a suspension that began in January 2020, coinciding with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chinese railway operator has indicated that this initiative will establish a new link between Beijing and Dandong, a key city on the Chinese side of the border, along with connecting to Pyongyang.

On the same day, another passenger train traveling from Beijing to Pyongyang is scheduled to arrive in North Korea’s capital at 6:07 pm. This reestablishment of rail connections is seen as a step toward rejuvenating travel and trade relations between the two countries, which have maintained a complex relationship over the years.

According to a notice from China Railway, trains between Beijing and Pyongyang will operate four times a week. In addition, there will be a daily service running between Dandong and Pyongyang, designed to enhance the frequency of travel across the border. This expanded connectivity is particularly important as China is North Korea’s largest trading partner, and the revival of train services is anticipated to have a positive impact on bilateral relations.

The official announcement by China State Railway Group Co, Ltd. regarding the resumption of international passenger train operations came earlier in the week, generating interest among commuters and businesses eager to return to pre-pandemic levels of interaction.
