The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident occurred in Jagatsinghpur, Odisha, where a 23-year-old woman lost her life after being allegedly raped twice, first by her boyfriend and then by a stranger. The events unfolded on February 22 when the woman left her residence, intending to elope with her boyfriend who had invited her to meet him under the pretext of marriage.

However, he reportedly took her to a remote area, sexually assaulted her, and subsequently abandoned her near a bus stand.

Second Assault and Death

While waiting at the bus stand, the victim was approached by a man from Jharkhand who was riding a motorcycle. He purportedly offered assistance but instead took her to the rooftop of his rented place in Paradip town, where he allegedly raped her for a second time. Following this, he is said to have thrown her off the building, leading to her death. Her body was discovered the following morning.

Missing Person Complaint and Investigation

The woman’s brother reported her absence on the evening of February 22 after she did not return home. An unnatural death case was initiated on February 23 once her body was found. On February 25, the brother filed another complaint accusing the two individuals of rape and murder, prompting the authorities to launch a comprehensive investigation.

Arrests and Legal Action

Both individuals involved in the case have been apprehended and are facing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which include kidnapping, rape, and murder. The police are currently conducting further inquiries into the matter.

Political Reactions

Naveen Patnaik, the president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Leader of the Opposition in Odisha, has expressed his condemnation of the tragic event and called for justice for the victim. In a statement on X, the former chief minister voiced concerns regarding the increasing number of crimes against women in the state, describing the current law and order situation as worrying.

He criticized the government for offering lengthy speeches about women’s safety while the reality on the ground remains precarious, advocating for more stringent and proactive measures to enhance safety and uphold legal standards.

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities have confirmed that the investigation into the case is actively continuing, aiming to uncover all relevant details surrounding the incidents and ensure accountability for those responsible.
