The Odisha government has reported the discovery of 1,741 errors in textbooks for Classes 1 to 8, a matter of serious concern following an expenditure of Rs 175 crore on their printing and publication. This issue was brought to light during an assembly session on Friday, where Nityanand Gond, the School and Mass Education Minister, provided a detailed written response to inquiries made by Congress MLA Sofia Firdous. The identified errors encompass grammatical, typographical, spelling, and a limited number of factual inaccuracies.

Details of Errors and Suggestions

The errors highlighted by Minister Gond included a significant 1,075 errors related to grammar, typography, and spelling, as well as five factual inaccuracies. In addition to these errors, a total of 661 suggestions for improvements to the textbooks were reportedly raised. Notably, the distribution of errors varied among different subjects, with the Class 8 Science textbook containing the highest count at 294 errors. Other textbooks, such as the Class 7 Urdu book, had 121 errors, while the Class 8 Sanskrit book had 114 errors. The Class 6 Social Science textbook recorded 98 errors, and the Class 7 Sanskrit book had 92 errors.

In light of these findings, Minister Gond stressed that remedial measures are being implemented in revised editions of the textbooks. Specific measures, including fact-checking by subject and language experts, have been introduced to ensure the accuracy of future textbooks. The aim is to produce error-free books that will be printed and distributed to students for the upcoming academic sessions.

Accountability and Future Measures

In another statement, Nityanand Gond explained that the responsibility for textbook publication lies with the Directorate of Teacher Education and the State Council of Educational Research and Training. He noted that the texts were printed according to a draft provided by the council. Following the identification of errors post-distribution, the government acted promptly by suspending the then director and three assistant directors. Additionally, disciplinary measures are being pursued against six other assistant directors involved in the process.

The government’s approach indicates a commitment to improving the quality of educational materials. By emphasising corrective action and stricter oversight, the Odisha government aims to enhance the integrity of its educational resources. The measures taken demonstrate an effort to prevent the recurrence of such errors in the future and to ensure that students receive accurate and reliable content.
