FSSAI Proposes Ban on Sucrose and Fructose in Infant Foods Under Six

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced a draft amendment to the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020, which aims to enhance the nutritional standards for infant food products. This draft, released on Friday, suggests a prohibition on the addition of sucrose and fructose in food items intended for infants aged up to six months. The amendment seeks to restrict the inclusion of sugars during this critical developmental stage of a child’s life.

Currently, the regulations permit the use of lactose and glucose polymers as the primary carbohydrate sources in infant nutrition products. However, manufacturers are allowed to incorporate sucrose and/or fructose as carbohydrate sources when necessary, provided they comply with specified limits. The new amendment proposes to eliminate this allowance for products aimed at infants under six months, stating that “sucrose and fructose shall not be added in the products intended for infants up to the age of 6 months.”

If the amendment is enacted, it will prevent manufacturers from including these sugars in infant nutrition products designed for this age group, thereby aiming to enhance the overall quality of infant food.

Rationale Behind the Proposed Changes

FSSAI has indicated that the first six months of an infant’s life are crucial for growth and development, making adequate nutrition essential during this period. The proposed amendment intends to ensure that products formulated for young infants meet their nutritional needs without unnecessary added sugars. This initiative also aligns with broader public health goals to mitigate the risks associated with early exposure to added sugars, which can contribute to childhood obesity and other health issues.

The proposed restrictions are consistent with established public health recommendations that advocate for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months after birth. By enforcing stricter nutritional requirements for infant food products, FSSAI aims to promote formulations that address the specific dietary requirements of infants during their formative months.

The existing regulations already outline comprehensive requirements regarding the nutritional composition, quality, and safety of various categories of infant nutrition products intended for children from birth to 24 months. This amendment seeks to further refine these standards.

Next Steps for the Draft Amendment

FSSAI has made the draft amendment available for public review to gather feedback from stakeholders. Individuals and organisations can submit objections and suggestions within 60 days from the date the Official Gazette containing the notification is made public. The food regulator will assess the feedback received during this period before finalising the amendment.

The proposed changes reflect FSSAI’s commitment to advancing science-based food safety regulations and encouraging responsible manufacturing practices. The emphasis on protecting children’s nutritional health from infancy is a significant aspect of this initiative.

In summary, the draft amendment aims to reinforce the nutritional standards for infant food products by prohibiting the addition of sucrose and fructose. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure that infants receive the essential nutrients they require during their early development, thereby supporting their long-term health and well-being.
