The recent incident of molestation in Jamui, Bihar, has escalated reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership, with officials vowing to take stern measures against those responsible. Bihar’s Minister for Agriculture, Vijay Kumar Sinha, referred to the occurrence as “unfortunate” and underscored the state government’s determination to confront criminal behaviour and uphold legal standards.

Sinha articulated the need to transform societal values through character development, emphasising the importance of fostering goodwill and harmony within the community. He cautioned against allowing individuals with a negative mindset to disrupt the societal fabric, highlighting Bihar’s previous struggles with criminality.

In a pointed remark, Sinha expressed confidence that the state would not revert to periods characterised by lawlessness, declaring, “Neither will ‘jungle raj’ return nor will ‘goonda raj’ come. In Bihar, the rule of law and the principles of Biharis will prevail.”

Political Criticism Surrounds the Incident

Amid these assurances, BJP Member of Parliament Vivek Thakur condemned the situation and directed criticism towards the opposition, particularly the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Thakur accused RJD leaders of inconsistent statements following the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, suggesting that their shifting accountability was questionable.

Thakur characterised the incident as deeply tragic and condemned any attempts to politicise it, asserting that crime should never be viewed through a caste or political lens. He raised concerns regarding the demographic responsible for significant criminal activity, urging immediate action to maintain order and restore public trust in law enforcement.

In response to the incident, Thakur stated, “There can never be any two opinions on law and order. A criminal has no caste; crime is his profession,” placing emphasis on the need for prompt and decisive responses from the authorities.

Ongoing Investigation and Responses

The incident has generated significant political dialogue as the police continue their investigation. Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of the opposition and RJD member, expressed outrage over the handling of the case by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, labelling the occurrence as “shameful.” Yadav insisted that the portrayal of the incident reflects poorly on the government and called for stringent actions against all involved.

Yadav highlighted the emotional resonance of the incident, suggesting that if the victim were related to officials, their responses might differ. He passionately urged for accountability from the government, calling for severe consequences for the accused.

Current police investigations are focusing on multiple suspects, with significant action taken against those distributing the related video. Reports indicate that around 120 social media accounts are being scrutinised for sharing materials that could compromise the minor’s identity, signalling the authorities’ zero-tolerance policy towards such violations.

Additionally, a case has been registered, invoking various sections of the law, including the POCSO Act and IT Act. The police have detained several minors linked to the incident and are making efforts to curb the circulation of harmful content regarding the minor victim, with legal repercussions outlined for those failing to comply.

The situation continues to develop as law enforcement remains vigilant in apprehending all associated with this grievous incident. Public statements warn against sharing harmful or revealing materials on social media, affirming the commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of minors.
