The Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) has unveiled its newly appointed national office-bearers, which includes a significant number of former Trinamool Congress (TMC) Members of Parliament (MPs). On September 23, NCPI National President Jyotiprokash Chatterjee confirmed that seven former TMC MPs are among the 27 individuals assigned pivotal roles within the organisation.

Notable appointments include former TMC MPs Abu Taher Khan, Deepak Adhikari Dev, Yusuf Pathan, Jagdish Chandra Barma Basunia, Rachana Banerjee, and Mitali Bag, who will serve as Vice Presidents. Additionally, Bapi Halder has been designated as the General Secretary.

The organisational structure further includes new Vice President Chandrima Panja and several General Secretaries: Uttiya Kundu, Sulekha Bhunia, Vivek Mishra, and Shuvendu Chakraborty. Other appointed Secretaries are Avishek Mukherjee, Kallol Chakraborty, and Bappa Sardar, among others.

Context of the Appointments

The appointments come in the wake of a substantial shift in political allegiance, with 20 TMC Lok Sabha MPs defecting to the NCPI around four months ago, following the party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The exodus of these MPs reportedly occurred as they aligned themselves with the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The political implications of these shifts remain significant, especially considering the ongoing scrutiny regarding the status of the MPs who joined the NCPI. Disqualification petitions have been lodged against them under the anti-defection law, initiated by TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

Following this, the matter has reached the Supreme Court, where the former TMC MPs argued that their transition to the NCPI constitutes a valid merger. They have positioned themselves as supporters of the NDA amidst legal challenges regarding their parliamentary status.

Rebel MPs Seek Extension for Response

The rebel MPs have requested an additional four weeks to respond to disqualification notices issued by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. This request follows the expiration of an earlier deadline, signalling ongoing legal engagement surrounding their political shift.

The NCPI has reiterated its stance as an independent political entity within the NDA. The recent appointments are viewed as a formal expansion of the party’s organisational capacity in line with the inclusion of former TMC lawmakers.

This development adds to the ongoing reshaping of political alliances in West Bengal, as parties continue to navigate the complexities of alliance formations and electoral strategies in the wake of recent electoral outcomes.
