Three Fishermen Found Dead After Cyclone Murasu

The CSR Journal Magazine

The discovery of three bodies belonging to fishermen missing after Cyclone Murasu has sparked significant anger and grief in Kasimedu, a locality in Chennai. Families of the deceased are questioning the government’s response and demanding accountability for the apparent failure to rescue the fishermen in a timely manner. The fishermen were part of a nine-member crew from Kasimedu fishing harbour, who became stranded at sea due to a mechanical failure in their trawler.

As Cyclone Murasu struck, the vessel was left vulnerable in rough seas. The bodies of the three fishermen were located in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, raising concerns about the fate of the remaining six crew members. Families have expressed their anguish, alleging that they had informed authorities about the missing fishermen, but no effective measures were taken to locate them promptly.

In the wake of this tragedy, Chief Minister Vijay expressed condolences and announced a compensation package of Rs 7 lakh for each bereaved family. However, the announcement has done little to alleviate the anger felt by the families, who are demanding more substantial answers regarding the lack of timely rescue efforts and safety measures for fishermen.

Questions Over Safety Protocols

The situation has raised critical questions about the safety protocols in place for fishermen during adverse weather conditions. Reports indicate that the fishing vessel remained at sea despite weather advisories urging fishermen to return to shore. Families are now questioning why the vessel was allowed to venture out given the cyclone warnings. They are also concerned about the absence of effective communication mechanisms that could have ensured the fishermen’s safe return.

Finance Minister Marie Wilson, who visited the affected families before heading to Andhra Pradesh, acknowledged the gaps in the safety protocols. He revealed that the fishermen lacked essential safety gear, insurance, and other mandatory documents. Wilson assured families that efforts would be made to improve the system to prevent such incidents in the future.

Despite his visit, the anger among the families persists. One family member highlighted the absence of the Fisheries Minister during the critical initial days of the crisis, stating that they had waited for three days for a visit from the minister. The emotional distress has led to extreme statements from family members, with one woman declaring that they would resort to self-immolation if their fishermen were not returned.

Political Repercussions and Calls for Accountability

The incident has also ignited political criticism, with Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin accusing the government of negligence. He pointed to the families’ claims that authorities failed to act despite being notified about the fishermen’s disappearance. Stalin questioned the decision to allow fishermen to go out to sea during the cyclone and demanded accountability from the government for its inaction.

Stalin has called for increased compensation beyond the Rs 7 lakh already announced, arguing that the families deserve more substantial support in light of their loss. He has also urged the government to implement measures that would prevent such tragedies in the future, including ensuring life insurance coverage for all fishermen venturing out to sea.

The ongoing situation highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures and accountability in the fishing community, particularly in the face of natural disasters. As families continue to grieve, the demand for answers and effective action remains at the forefront of their concerns.
